I've just hit 50 hours on my 496HO. So far, the only problem has been a leaky gasket. However, having the 5 year warranty is nice. On poker runs and longer trips, the engine has been very solid and just begs to keep going.

That said, I do wish I had opted for the 500 for the speed. 2 or 4 or 8 more mph -- who cares! Can you ever have enough speed??

Early 496's had an intake sucking sound at low speed,not a problem oyher than noisey. There is a service bulletin warranty fix,ask your dealer

Warrior - I'm rounding, but even alamo states $9k. I was quoted $12k upper for each engine:eek: I would have done $5-6 in a heartbeat. Maybe my dealer was blowing smoke?

I agree that your AT might benefit 8-10, but 90% of the other V's will not. If the marine industry(merc) does not make the costs of continuing tooling and upkeep for the exisitng blocks profitable for GM, bye-bye. right?

With the 502 not going into any vehicles anymore, I'm sure manufacturing is on a limited basis. The price differential will continue to broaden in the future. The HP3, might just be the next generation for this range of horsepower.

The HP3's already racing the circuit are proving to be very strong and durable at over 500hp.

Thanks everybody for your response! Why did I select the 496 HO's? Well, when I started shopping for a boat I wanted alot of creater comforts and my target speed was 75-80 MPH. I was surprised and amazed I could get that kind of speed with the 496 HO's. I did inquire about the 500 EFI'S and was quoted $25,000-$30,000 for the upgrade. I do not have a desire to spend the extra cash when I've already hit my target speed. I'm set in my mind that I want the 496 HO's, I just recall reading a number of threadS about some problems when the engine was first introduced. I believe all the bugs have been worked out and wanted to verify with all the members who have them. Sounds like the overwhelming majority are very satisfied! I would appreciate any additional feedback on the 496 HO performance etc.

It's only a 45 horsepower upgrade per motor and normally the rule of thumb is 15 ponies per mph gained. Work the math for the money, and factor in the non-closed loop cooling and the future of the motors.....

There is a considerable difference between the 500efi & the 496 that does not reflect in the horse power difference and / or top speed difference. Most boating is done @ cruise speeds, between 3400 rpm & 4000rpm. Push the sticks abruptly forward on a 500efi in that range and your passengers will be nailed to their seats!!!!!!

Now, if we could just get the passengers to help pony up the extra $20,000, I'm there.
