Anyone else get flipped off in your HP boat from time to time?
This past Saturday a buddy and I were running my boat and he said he saw a couple of billies in a bass boat flip us off! I asked my friend if he thought I got to close to them and he seemed to agree with me that we were running at a safe distance. Our lake is small and you have to pick and choose when you can run WOT and when to just chill. I just don't get why some people have to be that way. It seems that there are five major clicks on our lake. Water skiers, fishermen, jet skiers, racers, and pontooners of which I do all of them. It is amazing how close some boats come to our pontoon when we are fishing. Sometimes it kind of bothers me, especially when their spray reaches our boat. I still refrain from flipping the bird. Maybe I am to nice.:D One thing I have learned is that HP boats, cars, etc. all draw attention and sometimes it is negative attention.:( Is it just me or do others have this happen to them from time to time? How should I handle it in the future?

All the time .... and, you know what? .... Return to Sender
|
I boat near Annapolis, which i beleive is the blowboat capitol of the world. I have more than once got the you are number one signal from my slow poke friends. It seems to me if you keep waiving at them, it seems to make them even more POed. I am sure you are not alone on this one.

I knew I wasn't the only one. I do a pretty good job at respecting other boaters space on the water, but you can't please em all. I get more thumbs up than birds and that is always nice.:) Chances are those guys were out starting bar fights the night before anyway. Those days are long gone for me so I guess a friendly wave is the best response. ;) When I was a younger, crazier man I would have had a very different reaction and someone may have been going swimming.:D
|
I always thought that meant they only caught one fish.. hmmm ..Well I know I give everyone a wide berth if possible.. If not they want to race.. I just throw a short wave and smile. That gets them. I dont let it bother me unless they get reckless and I have passengers, then I will write down numbers..
Lets have fun and go boating.. |
Oh Yeah...all the time !
Usually by some fishermen anchored smack in the middle of the channel ! I return the favor promptly... |
GOTTA LOVE THE FISHERMAN ANCHORED SIDEWAYS IN TH MIDDLE OF A CHANNEL .. HEY WES WHERE DO YOU BOAT WE ARE NOT TOO FAR FROM EACH OTHER.. I AM ALWAYS OUT ON THE SOUTH SHORE.. BETWEEN JONES AND FIRE ISLAND INLETS.. INSIDE AND OUT...
|
And I thought that they were just saying hello!
|
I seem to get more negative attention at the ramp when I first start the engine.:D

Blow boat
I passed a blow boat the other day at about a hundred. he must have heard me coming (dry exhaust) anyways three dudes on board and one has his shorts around his ankles giving me
"ole red eye" ...no reason..buddies all grinnin. wind was blowing a liitle that day soooooooooon my return run I passed on their windwrd side pulling a 50 ft roostertail. oooh baby I had no idea how much water was in one of those tails. FULL hosedown I mean absolutley drenched. Now I 'm not a vindictive, get even type guy. I believe the best revenge is living well. But, I have to admit to a little satisfaction from that little stunt. Maximus |
Ignorance is bliss
I Have a bass boat ..which is hardly ever used for fishing, a 90 mp. hp boat which does alot of cruising and a couple stand up jet skis.. If you ask me they all have their place and time ..I dont jet ski on a busy hot saturday afternoon , it just aint worth it.. I dont race when im in tight quarters with alot of other boats , unless its to evade the crowd. As soon as the fisherman who get POed every time a boat goes by realize" they must share the water"the better off well all be. But what realy gets my goat is just plain stupidity and the king of the idiots has to be these first time on water, just bought the thing , sit down jet skiiers who do nothing but spin around in circles like a dog chasing its tail..The next time im behind one of these peop%$..morons and they decide to abruptly spin out and change course without even looking ..Im gonna chase em down and have a little chit chat ..
"Man thats gonna leave a mark":D |
I hear you loud and clear. Where I boat, in southern NJ, at mid tide and lower, there is not a lot of water, except in the channel. Of course, the fishermen are either trolling, or anchored right in the middle of the channel that is only 30 feet across, and they get all pissy when you go by in your "loud HP boat". Get the #$#@ out of the middle of the channel. But you have to be cool, as these type of boaters love to label us HP boaters as the bad boys on the waterways, yet we drink our beer when the boat is on the trailer, washing it off, and those guys drink their beer "all day long while they are fishing, and wonder why they can't find the dock.

I just pull up and open my engine hatch whip out some fishing poles , makes sure u ask em if this is a good spot to catch a BIG one. I've done this after getting the finger , they just can't believe u got ball's this big. And my brother in the picture is a great fisherman. So what's real funny is it only takes him a few minutes to catch one and that really pisses em off.

I have been flipped off way more on the jet ski than in any of my boats. I did get the clap thing at a restaurant one night after docking-when I shut down the motor-guess it was a little loud:rolleyes: I do get some pretty nasty looks when I fire up the twin eggbeaters on the back of the cruiser-good ol' two stroke fumes seem to piss people off a little at the dock. Must be enviro-nazis or something :D
The best one was when I went over on the jet ski to a small sailboat that was aground in some skinny water. Before I even offered them help this long haired maggot flips me off and says "ha-ha look at the stuck sailboat" to which I replied "Sailboats don't get stuck, Sailors do" and then calmly drove away. Damn was his date pissed. They were only there another 2 hours or so:rolleyes: |
I usually get it from the blowboaters that are anchored in their mooring. In one of the lakes here to get aroung to some of the restaurants you have to go around the marinas and that is where I usually get it and I'm not even throwing a wake. I guess they want their cake and to eat it to. I always smile and wave hello. :D :p

LMAO at WWW TOPDJ ! :D
I carry a rod or two with me and yes, I have been flipped off by more than one fisherman...I think I am going to borrow that tactic from now on! That is great...:D |
He was probably just telling you were number one. But he lost his index finger in a horrible accident when he tried to unwrap his fishing line from the trolling motor.:D
|
Too Funny guys! LMAO!!!
Ya, I've had my fair share of friendly salutations from all types. It ranges from a Middle Fingers, to "Brown-Eye-Salutes"(must be a local thing, right Maximus?) to clenched fist waves...I just act like whatever and either just keep on mgoing or give them the goofiest grin I can think of and wave like a clown....that really seems to boil their blood the most. It kills me though when some moron is tied to a channel marker, illegal of course, and thinks people should avoid them at all costs...I'm sorry, but get the Fvck out of the channel if you want peace and quiet. |
Being "flipped" is mild. I was giving this guy as wide a berth as possible since he was pretty close to the dock I was approaching and he hailed me over (I thought he had a mechanical problem and not a mental one) and when I got close enough he hooked me (and I mean flesh here) with his lure! You don't want to know how this ended but it was ugly and lots of cops were involved. --- Jer

BAJA has it right...the biggest smile pisses 'em off the worst, especially with a friendly wave, course then again, I love the idea of pulling the rods out and out catching them!:D :D
What amazes me about all this, is, during the fishing tournaments here at LOTO or even Table Rock, these dudes drive 80mph zipping in and out of family boats, cutting them off, cutting in front of them, doing things that to this day still amaze me, all in hot pursuit of a fish that isn't going anywhere....and yet if we get within 2 miles of their perfect fishing spot (as mentioned repeatedly above, usually sideways in the middle of a channel), we get the finger or some lame insult shouted. Remember! A huge part of this is simple envy...;) Rodney? Can we all get along??? WM |

Powerboaters: 100 :D Sailboters: Zero  Me flipped off? Only once, when I was being really good, too. Couldn't figure it out, so I turned back, came up to the guy with Captains Call shut (nice and quiet) and politely asked what I did wrong. The guy had to admit "Nothing". He just didn't like performance boats. Embarassed the sh#t out of him in front of his lady friend who was still yelling at him (big time) when I left. THAT was the best revenge. :p |
We get that most of the time... Dad always laughs and slows down, makes a turn and goes by them just enough to keep it on plane and swamp them with the wake LOL! Then we wave and Take off.. LOL! :D :D
|
By the way...absolutely loved the rooster tail incident above, LMAO, rolled on the floor...tears, the works!
That's the same kind of chit I would come up with, if provoked as mentioned! :D WM |
I have to admit I have done some things to deserve it, but so far it hasn't happened. I have had words with people on jet skis before though. I don't understand how people can be so dumb, even the adults(and sometimes I think they're worse). I've been riding them since I was seven and believe me I knew a boat was alot bigger than me and I looked every which way before I did anything. It just takes a little common sense and I was taught the basics from my Dad.

OK...hows this. see if you can catch all your crap as its bouncing from one side of the boat to the other:D |
  Sometimes Hot Boaters are IDIOTS !!
After our Poker Run this weekend, at about 8P.M. there were 12 boats off a point fishing (sitting still). Two brothers in two blown cats came around the island....... the newest of the cats went right thru the gathered boats at about 80 mph- very bad !! The other went wide around the fishermen (good). The lake at this point was only about 3 miles wide so there was no lack of room for the fast boats to avoid the fishermen. It was just plain rude of them...... BUT they were not alone !!! No, No......here comes a 32' Cruiser !!! And follows the cat's path thru the boats!!! 4 foot wake generated about 50 feet from a small aluminum flat bottom fishing boat is not cool !!! (I was in it!!) These guys should have had their tickets punched!!! I like goin' fast too, but let's be courteous of others, if for nothing else, the reputation of our sport. |
**** AMEN to that , Troutly !!
|
It's funny you mention that Troutly, I was just talking to my Dad about that on Father's day when we went out for a little ride. It seems that boaters just aren't as friendly as they used to be. My Dad agreed. I remember when he used to take me out when I was a kid (irony....now I take him out) everyone would say hello no matter what kind of boat you drove. It seems like very few people acknowledge each other anymore or much worse get flipped off
|
I agree!
I try to wave at every boat on the water, but often times the response just isn't there. It does seem as though things are not the same.
|
I personally think this topic is sort of ironic and a little bit humorous.
First of all, depending on who your audience is, your results will vary. Fisherman hate go fast boaters and go fast boaters hate fisherman, etc. (I know I am exaggrating, but you get my point.) One nice thing, we all hate jet skiers ;) The "group" that frustrate me are the ones either in jet boats or in hot boats. Had one the other day go by me and my family throwing a huge rooster tail. Was so close that I felt some spray. Lake Lanier is only 38,000 acres:rolleyes:  I wave to everyone. Pontoon boaters are probably the friendliest followed by my fellow sport boaters. Sorry, but people driving the hot boats and offshore styles tend to look at me like I am a loser and hardly wave back. (I am a loser, but don't treat me like one!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I love looking and staring at the big, fast boats as they roar by. Just remember, that everyone boats for a different reason. I don't want or need a 30' + boat, I enjoy the watersports too much. Just my thoughts from a little sport boater. |
I do the "waving thing" also....usually everone waves back no matter what boat I am driving..
I am a Hot Boater, but also have a FISH boat & cruise in a Pontoon boat and use a wave runner. I use them with respect to others. The major key here is there is no need to "HATE" any group of boaters. We all just need to show respect to all other groups of boaters. We are only a small portion of the nautical scene & several small lakes have already "legislated" gas motorized boats over a certain hp off of them. Let's not be the cause of disrespect and this happening to you. I do not want to get "the Bird" because of anothers carlessness. :( |
"Fisherman"?
"Blowboaters"?? "Jet Skiers"??? "Pontoon Boaters"???? I think there are only two kinds of boaters. *******s. Not *******s. Just my .02 |

I'm hoping to get the finger real soon.........:D :D

Hey Nasty .... I thought you just had that exam :D
|
Dangit !!! My wife must have logged in under my name...
:D 2.5 yrs to go till the EXAM hope i don't realize I have been living a lie  |
Had a good one this weekend
Ide just planed off and headed wide of a marker at the edge of a shallow rocky section of water 2-10 feet , rocks everywhere.. This guy with about 15 people in a 20 foot bowrider at WOT cut right thru the rocks , makes it and then cuts me off from the left ..I couldn't resist and gave him the double arm wave ..He slows down so I go over to tell him how close he came to killing his whole family..When I get near the boat he yells "whats you f'ing problem you idiot, with a real angry look on his face .. I almost dove out of the boat I wanted to kick his skinny little a$$ so bad.. I calmly tell him that not only did I have the right of way there , but you just went through a real shallow rocky area on the wrong side of the marker ..He then proceeds to flip me off, he floors the boat and his wife falls over backwards with a beer in her hand..... I just sat there shaking my head for 10 minutes..
I didn't realize they made people this stupid.. Then again Al Gore almost got elected:D :D :D |
I have been real lucky...
Last year on the river I had 3 different women in boats flash me their rack...and no one gave me the finger... I wouldn't know about this year :( |
LMAO --I liked the part about AL GORE. Many years ago the bridge at parkers landing on hardy pond wasn't a no wake zone. There are 4 spans and the fisherman used the outside ones. One day I am coming up to the bridge at speed ( 50 mph ) and at the last moment I notice that the guy standing in the middle of the center span has a fishing pole in his hand and I see the line going down into the water. I swerve and just miss the line without hitting the pilings. Had passengers on board. If it hadd been only me I would have just ducked. I pulled back arround and nicely explained the error of his ways. He told me to F off. I then went up river and trimmed the drive to throw a roost at speed. I then came from behind him under the bridge making sure that there wern't any cars crossing the bridge. Just as I exited the bridge I nailed it and blew the guy down. Needless to say a few words were said and he wanted to invite the law and I said to go ahead. I told him that he was warned that the center spans were for boat trafic. Last year at coast guard festival the river is a zoo and at one of the narrowest parts this guy is trying to anchor his boat on the very edge of the channel. Well because of the fact that my boat idles at 6 mph I go by him about 15 ft away ( couldn't get any farther due to other boats) and he yells at me - Thanks for nocking him off anchor. I then inform him that if a 6 inch wake knocked him off anchor he didn't know what he was doing. Heated words were said by him. I then asked him how much line (rode ) he had out and he said 20 feet. I informed him that it was 15 feet deep here and that he needed at least 45 feet out. Needless to say he didn't listen to a thing I said and kept trying to get it to set with the short line.

No offense, but you guys spend too much time ranting at idiots. Everybody thinks they own the water. Hell, I always though they were indicating I was NO. 1
