Got My First Issue of Boating

Bonnier KISS MY A$$... I received my first issue of Boating today. Wrote "Return to Sender" on the front, and I nice little message stating "If I wanted Boating Mag, I would have subscribed. Take you Mag and Shove It".

Oh yeah, it also had a special included if I wanted to extend my subscription..... What a bunch of A-Holes

twin screws 02-27-2012 12:46 PM

Who is Bonnier and what is so bad about getting a copy of Boating? Unless you give us a little more info you should take a chill pill, hahaha!!!

gonna write rutern to sender on mine also F~them, I will never ever get a mag that I know they own, anybody have a list?

Tom A. 02-27-2012 02:18 PM

When I was at the Miami Boat Show, I walked up to the guy at the Boating magazine booth, politely asked him to pass on a message, and proceeded to tell him the whole Powerboat BS story. He looked at me shook his head and said there was nothing he could do and that I was not the first person to bring it up.
I said, "I know there is nothing you can do for me and it is not your fault. However, you can relay all these complaints back to your people and show them how many subscriptions they lost and will never get back!" He said he would do that.

ICDEDPPL 02-27-2012 03:06 PM

oh no you mean I won`t get to see another Spectre glowing review in every single issue?? what was up with that anyway Spectre must have been a paying a lot of $$ for all those so called reviews.

Actually I don`t mind getting BOATING.. its something different. Reading reviews of boats 90% of the population can`t ever afford including me wasn`t too interesting.

Have you been under a rock for the past year??? :lolhit: Bonnier is the company that aquired Power Boat Mag. Then shelved it, then produced it again just long enuff to suck more renewals and new subscriptions, to then shut it down. They then took all of the subscriptions and switch them to Boating Mag.

I paid for a subscription to Powerboat so I could read about poker runs, performance boat reviews, etc. Not read reviews about big ugly cabin cruisers and Inboard ski boats.......

POWERPLAY J 02-27-2012 03:59 PM

I recieved an issue also. Now I have two, maybe they can tack on the remaining sub to my existing sub. It's not a bad rag, it just doesn't cater to hi po stuff.

Magicfloat 02-27-2012 04:11 PM

I got 2 subscription renewal offers in the mail on the same day.One said as a preferred subscriber I could renew for $18 a year.Other one said I could renew for one year for $8,or 2 years for $12.Their subscription dept. needs to get their act together.I did not renew but I guess will get the mag anyway as i was a PB subscriber. The mag is a shadow of its former self.Sad,but sign of the economic times.

modvp 02-27-2012 07:30 PM

It may have been a ploy to get more subscribers to sign up to receive boating mag.

TEAMBAJA 02-27-2012 07:36 PM

I wondered why I got the magazine in the mail. Thought maybe I got drunk one night and subscribed.

If you begin to receive magazines that you subscribed to while drunk, you may have a slight drinking problem........:drink: Waking up next to a fat chick is one thing but waking up with a new magazine subscription........that is taking it too far....

Plowtownmissile 02-27-2012 10:27 PM

I was already subscribed to Boating and PowerBoat both (along with BoatingWorld and PerformanceBoats). I'm waiting to see if I start getting two copies of Boating now :party-smiley-004:

With all due respect (and not that it really matters now because Powerboat is gone), but having worked for Powerboat for 17 years and having written (for better or worse) most of the boat tests, I just don't recall a "Spectre glowing review in every single issue."

You're right, Powerboat, which had the words "leading performance boating magazine" up top on every cover, did cover product "most people" can't afford. But then, most people can't afford performance boats, period. Judging from what you've written, boating is a decent publication for you to receive.

So ... cool.

I really wish someone would..... Not that I expect a settlement. But this is a typical bait and switch.

All you boycotters just transfer the remaining issues to me. I won't have to pay for Flying or Boating for years... :evilb:

thirdchildhood 02-29-2012 06:55 AM

I wonder if the 2 for 1 gift subscriptions are still going out. I was supposed to receive a gift sub of Powerboat.

Biggus 02-29-2012 07:31 AM

-Also got a free issue of Boating yesterday. Have not read one in quite a while and read it cover to cover. Not a bad mag but a bit too 'first grade' for ones who have been messing with boats for decades.

I'd like to see a magazine along the line of the old Performance Reports from Powerboat. Those were great!

Im not too concernd about this class action thing. Im out like $12! Oh well! but It just sux that there is little tv coverage as well as the written publication now gone too.

I rarely saw any bad reviews. I like it when they tell it like it is. Also there were never any pics of the hull and bottom. The older magazines had these pics and they are important. Also, Powerboat had catered too much to Bob Teaque and pushing his products; Sometimes through misrepresentation. Anyway, I still miss it. I do like Boating mag and hope I get my free sub but I fully understand you guys being pissed for being tricked into subscribing to a magazine that you did not want. They should have offered refunds.

It isn't about the money. It is the fact that they really jerked people around. Especially when they were tricking people into renewing their subscription, when it appears they knew they were closing the doors....

A class action suit would cost them and make the lawyers rich, I know this. I wouldn't want a penny really, just seem Bonnier should have to be held accountable...

You didn't offend me at all. If you'd replaced the word "Spectre" with "Fountain" you would have been a lot closer to the mark and I wouldn't have responded. It's just that ... we didn't test that many Spectres. :)

You rarely saw bad reviews because ... we rarely saw bad boats.

Think about it for a moment. You're a builder. You're going to a Powerboat magazine test. Do you think, just maybe, you might prepare, maybe even go the extra mile to make sure everything is right? That is why we took pains to make the point, "that boat on that day."

And when you're getting boats from Skater, MTI, Cigarette, Outerlimits, etc. ... well, OK, you tell me: Which one "deserves" a bad review? The product we got was generally pretty good to great.

I've told this one sentence story before but I'll tell it again now: On the same day a reader called me and told me I was a whore for my review of one builder's model, the builder called Powerboat's publisher and canceled his ad schedule because I was "too hard" on his model. Comes with the job, not a complaint, but something to consider.

As for the rest, I won't comment. Accusations of "misrepresentation" are pretty strong, as well as pretty vague. Not interested in going there.

Matt, I am surprised that you are defending Powerboat so much. I don't want to rehash everything but misrepresentation referred to Teaque's overly ambitious attempt to sell 496 CMI Sporttubes. He would constantly give speed increases of 4-6 mph in his "tech" column. I believed him. I spent $4,600. I saw ZERO gain. Thank goodness the 496 is long gone now. There was also an awful lot of Teaque Marine advertising.

Third,

Sorry for what seemed to be a defensive tone. Whenever I try to explain the "inner workings" of Powerboat it comes across as defensive, when really I'm just trying to explain without emotion. But the explanation, in and of itself, comes across as defensive every time and I haven't figured out how to fix that.

You're right. I most definitely no longer have a dog in the fight. Powerboat is done.

I respond because I respect you guys enough to try to give you the answers, at least as I see them. Even to questions that don't matter anymore. And I probably respond because, I will always have unfinished business with the magazine because of the way it went down—make that flushed down—in the end. (But I'm not bitter. :))

Sorry to hear about your troubles with the 496 (I think you may have mentioned them before.) If I'd been dispensing advice, I probably would have sent you to Raylar. While I do not have firsthand experience with their upgrades, I have heard good things.

Anyway, sorry for the defensive tone. It was not meant that way and I don't feel that way, but I would be less than honest if I said it doesn't read that way. Cheers.

Ditto here! None of my comments were about Matt but rather some observations on ways the magazine went downhill.
