Chesapeake boaters - Surprise speed limit in C&D canal

Be aware that there is now a 35 knot daytime / 20 knot nighttime speed limit in the western end of the Chesapeake & Delaware canal from the Elk River to several miles east of Chesapeake City. This includes the basin where the Chesapeake Inn and soon-to-be-reopened Schaeffers Canal House are located.

Don't get caught by surprise when you make your first run this year... :eekdrop:

35 knots = 40 mph
20 knots = 23 mph

Thanks for the info ,i guess it was only a matter of time.

Is only for the Maryland portion of the canal? Or is Delaware included too? Who passed this speed limit?

Philster 03-16-2012 06:33 PM

Sounds like MD only. I run the canal every time out.

Just a sign of more restrictions to come. MD has a hard on about making boating life miserable.

They are just trying to slow you down, so they can get a better grasp on your wallet. The gubna is on a tax and spend spree that maryland has never seen before. Luxury taxes, taxes on labor, tax increases on smokeless tobacco, 500% increase on boat registration, sales tax on petrol/diesel, 3% increase on sales taxes for alcoholic beverages. He wants it all.

I'm guessing Gov. O'Malley's plans like numbers 6 & 7 are to be funded by by the endless monies us boaters have in our wallets. :bsflag:

Steve I was told that the railroad bridge in the canal south of the INN ix the DE/ MD border . MD law only

It almost sounds like the people on the canal who were fighting the noise regs had a part in it... However, running up the canal at 100 just isn't safe IMHO>.

Oh well, I never ran fast up in there anyway. So narrow and flat that it never made any sense for me to run any kind of speed.

I'll tell ya one thing... The noise regulations combined with speed limits, boat gathering limitations and luxury taxes are a pretty big red flag.

I always though that boating was a large part of the economy in MD , WTF ???

The Delaware / Maryland line is about half way between Summit Bridge and the harbor entrance at Chesapeake City.
Summit Bridge, route 896 is west of the railroad bridge.

What is the reason for the speed limit other than for writing tickets?
