How fast MTI 40 with 525's ?

tunnel boats are faster than V's,ok, but how fast can this one be with such ''small'' power ?

Dry sixes eat less power than a Bravo. ;)

Randy's boat is very nice.

marine concepts 03-19-2012 03:27 PM

When me and reggie won the world championship with it, it was running 128 in race condition down the straitaway, we had it up to 138 but it didnt pull as had.

TBAG 03-19-2012 03:37 PM

How many Speed Racers are out there?

Just curious.

Right on the money.

1) this boat, former race boat 2) Big speed, Sterling power, new 6 seat interior, 3) a closed canopy over seas.

Sydwayz 03-19-2012 03:49 PM

Speed Racers:
This one, affectionately known as "Little Speed"

And "Big Speed", 6 seater (now) open cockpit owned by Bob Christie; running "big" power.

I've been on Little Speed, and that boat is a blast to run. Randy took me along on a back from Hawks Cay some time back, and that boat rocks. It's compeltely tricked out inside.

Another overseas.

Two originals that I know of, Little Speed (40 Canopy w/525's) that Randy "Wild" owns and Big Speed the open canopy MTI with big power.

You can ask Randy "Marine Concepts" about both of them he had them built.

I also think there is also another clone over in Europe that they just added the Speed Racer stickers to if my memory is correct.

Actually there were three, the third was an open cocpit looks alot like Big Speedy but only had 600 or 625's? Its over seas, there has been pics on here before of it.

Cool! Thanks guys, not a huge fan of theme boats but always liked the Speedy themes.

125 mph = 201 kph

jeff32 03-19-2012 06:37 PM

no way this thing runs 125 with stock 525... if it really runs that, why run 800 or 900's high dollars engine to run 140 mph ... ???

makes no sense to me, but I never had a tunnel...maybe you guys did!!!

but if it is !!! these are great performance numbers! cent vingt cinq mile a l'heure ! Jeff P31 ! penses - y !!!

Wild 03-19-2012 06:37 PM

i have only been up to 124 but it has more with the right props, we run most poker run in the 110 range. when they raced it Reggie JR saw 140. its a fun boat, i know i will kick myself for selling it :)

jeff32 03-19-2012 06:44 PM

again, very impressive with those little motors... a little more knowledge for me today !!!

That's funny stuff... :lolhit: Little Speed is a cool boat. Turn-key, reliable, lots of custom parts and you can still walk away from most V-bottoms. Ehh.

Reggie Fountain 03-19-2012 07:31 PM

I can show you 140 MPH with it with the 525s. I have had it that fast.

bulletbob 03-19-2012 07:40 PM

That is really impressive numbers. I never would have guessed it. I would be elated to have a basically maintenance free cat like that.....if I could afford it.

teaguecustommarine 03-19-2012 07:51 PM

Top speed on a large cat with 525EFI's can get into the higher speeds. Just be prepared to hold the sticks down for a long time. The trick is to run smaller gear ratio's but keep the pitch up. As your slip comes down your speed can still hit those top numbers. A lot of the top number is based on the top RPM as well vs slip.

I know with Bob's race boat (368 Skater with BONE STOCK 525EFI's) has run just under 132 in a kilo but averages 115-130+ in normal race set-ups (depending on water conditions)..

I would imagine a 40' MTI (Awesome boat!) would get to 125MPH w/ 39's or 40's on it... This boat should have no problem getting down into the 8% slip or less on the big end..

Some people don't realize the difference between a boat set up for 525's vs. a boat with bigger power. It could be 2000+lbs, depending on the glass work and all the extra goodness installed. Weight placement can also effect the top speed.

140MPH is hauling ass even with big power, but it depends on how it is propped and set up. Honestly, would you rather had a boat that accelerated like hell to 140 or would you want something sluggish to 150? Either way your hauling ass but the acceleration is the fun part, because you are probably going to have an average cruising speed of 85-115? Boats are fun because you never really know what they are going to do until you get out there and do it!

I don't know if this makes sense or is on point, but my 2 cents -Eric

Speedracer will run 140 MPH with BONE STOCK 525s. With a hot set of 525s like Supercat light is running now it would approach 150 MPH.

I drove Randy's 40 Loriblu / Fastboats.com 40 MTI @ 125 plus with 4 people on the boat last year on the lunch run in Islamorada FPC run"...

Fun boat and a lot of fun!!!!

I have always been impressed with the numbers they get out of Cat Lite, prop technology has really opened that door. Bob raced with us in OPA'a Class1 a time or two when we were still running 750 Supercat motors we couldnt catch him. Just out of curiosity are these top end numbers with crash boxes and if so what would switching to a shiftable trans do to top end?

36Tango 03-19-2012 09:43 PM

Very, very few boats have the recognition of Speed Racer. I can't imagine what it would be like to pull that boat down the road, let alone to have it on the water. The 525's seems to be a great mix of speed, reliability, and fuel economy. The dirtiest spot on this boat is cleaner than anyplace on my boat. I'd hate to see it leave LOTO, but I sure don't have the checkbook to keep it there.

Philm 03-20-2012 01:45 AM

So here is a question. Why are the big cats, i.e. 368's, 388's, 40's, faster with 525's than a 30 or 32?

I understand that they have a lot more tunnel surface area, but they also have more weight and loads more aerodynamic drag. Does the tunnel size really make that much of a difference? What is the fastest 30, or 32 cat with 525's? I certainly cant say that I have ever read about any of them approaching 140mph.

MTI running at Smoke On The Water Poker Run

Music sucks on this

I had used somthing more appropriate but You tube changed it

We did not have any engine sounds for this but you can see this boat hauling the mail. Got a little scarry for a minute

byrideroffshore 03-20-2012 05:21 AM

Do they want $250k with power, no trailer? thats a great deal

skaterboy 03-20-2012 11:49 AM

Possibly someone can shed some light on me. When you use a "Prop Slip Calculator" and plug in the following values for calculating THEORETICAL SPEED of a boat running 525EFI and #6 drives:

Gear ratio - 1:50 (highest allowed ratio for racing orgs)
Prop pitch - 40P (maxium size pitch prop allowed)
engine rpm - 5600 rpm (rev limiter set on stock 525EFI)

In theory you get a top speed of 141 mph, with a 7% slip you would see an actual 131 mph. (if the boat was set up right on the money and ran perfect)

I don't understand how all these other " higher mph numbers" come out without changing one or more of the above variables.

I am willing to learn.

Wild 03-20-2012 12:48 PM

gear ratio and props wiill change with higher HP

tomcat 03-20-2012 01:18 PM

Hi Wild:

This boat holds a LOTO record doesn't it?. What RPM/ratio/props were used for that?

Thanks,

Tom

gofastlvr 03-20-2012 01:21 PM

Change in gear ratio is the usual culprit. I am pretty sure the ratios are as follows: 1.49:1, 1.35:1, 1.24:1 and 1.15:1 so you can see how it can be changed but as you go up in gears you will lose a lot of the punch. My boat has been 153 with 1.35's but with the 1.49's it's 10-15 mph slower but doesn't take 10 miles to get there.

Gofastlvr your boat has been over 160 MPH. I've played with alit of different ratios on your boat & it was a fast one.
