Transom Led Lights
#71
No one is expecting the same brightness. Go back several post and you'll see I even stated they weren't close. What is/has been said, for the price, they are ok.
Not everyone wants to drill holes. Next yr, I'll be over the disco lite and will just replace the lite with the drain plug. For now, it'll do the job.
For the cost of the lites as yours, I'd expect no less the lighting. They are very nice, no disagreeing there.
Those pics were taken with my phone, soooooooo

I think the drain plug LED is a great idea because it doesn't require drilling any holes but probably is not going to light things up like most people would want. So, why not just take a regular old drain plug, drill a small hole through the middle, run your wiring through it (long enough for whatever location you prefer your LED's to be mounted), then seal around the wiring where it comes through the plug (inside and out). This way, you could surface mount any size LED at any location on the transom with no through hull drilling. I guess someone could actually produce a "through drain plug wiring assembly" that would have 2 wires sticking out both sides of a pre-sealed drain plug. Simply take the old plug out, screw the new one in, run bilge side wires to battery or switch, run transom side to LED, done. But what the heck do I know.....

These are the ones I'm going to experiment with -

They're expensive ($56 for something the size of a quarter) but are rated at 1500 lumens per 700ma, which is FIVE times brighter than the high-end O LED standard models (the $250 ones).
I need to figure out mounting, power supply, thermal management, optics, and how the hell I'm going to seal them.

Using either brass or SS, I can turn up a mount that will house that LED unit in the body mount that will still screw into the drain plug for that no holes drilled concept. It'll have a cap that will screw on the end to hold the lens and an o-ring for sealing. Looking thru McMasterCarr under 'sight glasses' for an idea. I'm thinking the water will act as the heat sink???, using the appropriate o-ring for high temps. Going to check into polycarbonate for the lens so I could shape the lens for best light projection. I think the key will be to have a large unshrouded lens. Thoughts???? Another option is to make the end cap from polycarbonate in 1 piece that will make up the lens and body to screw over the LED, onto the main housing, using an o-ring at the threads for selling.(Picture the end of a flashlight)
I'm envisioning this to be about same dia as the drain plug body
2"OD?? and stick out no more than 3/4" or near that thick. The power wire passing thru the ID of the drain plug threads would be sealed with a wire compression fitting for added security to make sure water won't enter the bilge if the lens were to be compromised.

You could also incorporate a small drain passage so it didn't need to be removed to drain the bilge. 1/8" would be plenty, it really doesn't matter how long it takes to drain.

What? You might have to drill a hole!!!!!! (where there are already probably 20 holes already existing.....including some you could put a small child through......where the drives mount!)

I just don't get this. You guys are like a bunch of piranha (or pariah).
Why all the bashing and negativity? 8 pages beating on a simple little 50 dollar item. You don't like it. Don't buy it. Don't like the thread? Don't read it. Why waste you time on this?
What else can you buy for your boat for 50 bucks? 10 gal of gas...
Get over yourselves. I'm taking my own advice now. Done with this thread...
