I can understand paying the USE taxes based upon where you are moored. If your boat is moored for say 180 days in a particular state, then I can see having to pay that goverment entitity the tax they are entitled to.

I say, ask the auditor from illinois if you can get a refund for all the fuel you have purchased for the boat since 2006, and get a refund on the road use taxes you paid, since the boat was not used on a roadway in illinois. Other states offer that, why not illinois. Oh, I know, because its a state run by a bunch of crooked politicians who are repeatedly making hard working illinois residents pay for their F' up's.

Since we are on this subject.

I just printed some interesting info off of the Illinois DNR website. It says

"Boats Exempted from registration and titling: Watercraft shall not be required to be registered and titled under this act if it is:

1. A watercraft that has a valid marine document issued by the United States Coast Guard, EXCEPT that any such documented vessel used upon the water of this State for more than 60 days in any calender year shall be registered in compliance with this act. "

So, lets say you trailer your boat. I use my boat maybe a total of 8 days per month and that boating every weekend. So, from June, July, August, and Sept, thats 32 days of boating, if I boat every single weekend. So, according to this document, I would not need to register or title in illinois, if I am coast guard documented. heck, i live in illinois, but 90% of my boating is done in indiana and michigan waters.

You may be able to fight the state that way...assuming they go for it....the bigger issue and problem would be the water cops. If they dont see any registration around here they will pull you over and check you out....and most times its gonna be a full inspection....so is it worth getting pulled over every time you pass a patrol on the water? With them looking for revenue they will be stopping everyone for anything! :(

I am registered w them USCG any way so i don't need a state registration, and I have my boat in top shape not worried about DNR.just wish the state would play by the rules they set!!! Ill hire and give the money to an attorney before them!!!
