Precision Marine

We just spent a week working with the guys at Precision Marine down in Kenner, Louisiana and I wanted to pass along the positive experience we had. Both Mark and Chris are very knowledgeable and personable business owners and not once did they make us feel our little 26’ single engine boat wasn’t worth their time.

We had our 496 rebuilt from the crank out at another high performance marine engine shop but the engine’s ECM wasn’t tuned properly from the beginning. Everyone that I talked to all had ideas and suggestions but the problem was the type of ECM that is. At the time I was only aware of 3 shops that could tune the ECM, but without it being on the engine it was all shots in the dark and the last thing I wanted to do was screw up this engine while tuners on the other side of the country tried to figure it out. Once Mark and I spoke on the phone he informed me his shop was able to tune the ECM on the engine. This is exactly what I was looking for! We picked a week that worked for both of us and headed down south. Once we arrived they gave a tour of their facility and talked to us about what they intended on doing. Not once did I have to call to check up on the progress, each night around 5:30 Mark called to update us on the progress and status. They never once had us wondering what was going on. When all the work was completed Mark and Chris took us for a test ride on Lake Pontchartrain to show us first hand the improvements.

Now this is the important part, my wife wanted to kill me last year because we lost the entire Summer waiting for our engine to be built then for three different shops to figure out the alignment issue to only learn the engine wasn’t running properly! She was ready to get rid of the boat and had zero faith in the marine industry. After spending time with Precision Marine she learned that there are shops you can trust with our boat and money! She even posted a picture of Mark and Chris on Facebook and called them her new best friends!

If anything is going to be done to our engine from this point forward the guys at Precision Marine will be the ones that do it and my wife is on board. Besides, I cannot think of a better city to visit while work is being done on our boat.

It's so great to hear of a positive experience in the marine industry. Thanks for sharing.

TW720HVY 04-09-2012 11:30 AM

You're welcome and it really was my pleasure to share the story.

It is sometimes too easy to get wrapped up in all the negative and forget to talk about the positive.

Great to hear. They are great to deal with and honest.

Good to read stuff like this. If my boat needed any serious work it would be on the trailer headed to Precision.

It's been a couple years but they treated me very well. We had issues that had to be addressed but after Mark fixed them I'm convinced they were ethanol induced and not anything they had done (it was back when both Mark and I first encountered ethanol). Regardless, he stood up and got it worked out.

WARPARTY36 04-09-2012 02:23 PM

Yep, great guys and honest as the day is long.

They are also great translators for Pbam when he gets to drinkin' and you can't unnerstan his coonass.

Only met Chris a few times but Mark is first-rate.

JasonSmith 04-09-2012 04:09 PM

Who built the engine & "tuned" the ECM to start with?

VetteSteve 04-09-2012 06:11 PM

Great positive story

Yeah... my experience with them wasn't so good either. Very shabby work & I have plenty of pics to prove it. In all fairness his prices are a little bit cheaper but his work was a lot cheaper.

Good to hear.

You'd think there would be more stories like these, with the lean times we're in.

As tempting and entertaining as it may be I don't want to take away the positive aspect of the story. I am sure the answer can be found after a quick search.

You would think.

I am sorry about the few that had negative experiences, but all I can do is go off of what we experienced.

Blowing all of last year with a project that started the last weekend of January that went to the point we put her to bed in November, we hated our boat! It was just nice to work with a shop that cared and took the time to do it right. And importantly impressed my wife who did not trust anyone in the marine business anymore.

Mark and Chris are the best at these ECMs. I have made made Major changes to 525s and it would not be possible had it not been for their ECM and tuning abilities on their dyno.

I stopped by when your BAJA was there and went along when they were tuning it. Yes it ran like crap when they started and ran sweet when they were done!! Enjoy!!

We are hopeful we can finally enjoy a boating season now! They really know what they are doing to say the very least. And like I said earlier, my wife likes them!

I just wish it was making the power I was expecting and after talking with them they confirmed what I was feeling.

Always have had GREAT experiences with Mark and Chris. Very Professional!

They've been taking care of my boats for a long time, great guys to work with. If Mark would learn how to hold a dock line the place would be perfect!! Highly recommend them

What kind of power is it making now? I think you had mentioned it was @ 560?

It was the shop's 560HP conversion and it dyno'd less than 560 (I cannot locate the dyno sheets right now).

While it was getting worked on we didn't pull the engine so we do not have any hard numbers, just going from the professional opinions of those in the industry and the fact that before the work it was turning a 23P (after was still turning a 23P) and now it is turning a labbed 24P that was only turning 4900RPM at WOT before the lab work.

Marks dyno is a very real world representation of what it will really make. Unlike many of the "hot rod" dynos out there. If it makes a big number it will show it. It's very easy to turn the corrections up to make an engine look good. Mark and Chris don't do that. I hear some big numbers flying around and I say put it on a correct dyno and let's see. Tell me how much fuel its using and I'll tell you how much power it really makes. I'd rather have the truth. If you want a good chuckle they made a video that's on you tube that shows a 1200 plus HP (LOL) small block on their dyno.

We talked about this while we were there. We kept the engine in the boat and decided not remove the engine. But if any additional work is to be done I will asked them for a before and after pull.

Thanks for posting the video, I have been meaning to look for it.

I know this isn't what you're talking about, but here's a 1064hp naturally aspirated LSX small block...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnq7qja7As8

1800hp pump gas LSX turbo small block...

Just saying that you shouldn't count out the small blocks! :)

I have been in the drag racing engine business over 20 years. The marine stuff doesn't make the power but the drag race stuff wouldn't last an hour... Two different animals for sure. The ls engines are the future. I'm doing a jet boat project with a ls7... Should be cool!!
