Default Stringer Question

Looked at a 1991 Fountain 27 Fever Monday. The boat looked real clean but both my friend and I noticed that the port, outer stringer sounded hollow when we knocked on it. I also knocked on the port side main stringer that the motor bolts to and that sounded solid. Is this a pretty good indication of rot? I know I could ask the seller about drilling a couple of test holes but the boat is almost 3 hours away and I don't want to waste the seller's time (and mine).
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks: Matt

I had a Sunsation Rocket that sounded hollow When you knocked on the stringers. But only on the aft 2 feet of the stringers. I drilled a test hole and discovered the stringers were bone dry and solid underneath. The fiberglass had delaminated from the wood in that area. I was told it was from the boat being pounded hard in rough water.
