I would do both.
Me to for having both. I did have a internal one come apart, but being as I had both, I was able to continue boating without worry until I could replace the internal one.

Externals are a nice simply because they don't rely on springs or rubber seals or anything of that nature. Obviously slash tips or angle cut make that impossible so internal are a must. Pay attention to how you come off plane, I often chop the gas and watch the incoming wave then lightly bump the throttle to keep it from hitting the stern hard. So I treat the internal stops as a back up measure rather than primary. Also no body has mentioned, but make sure you have adequate risers above the manifolds.
