What should I see with Yami 250's with 3 blade, don't know what pitch?

2000' Scarab Sport. 2005 300hp Yamaha HPDI's. Just replaced my 3 blades with new set of 3-blades. Breaking in new lower unit so have not pushed the sticks down.
On old props, used to get low 60MPH range. Recently, was mid-upper 50MPH range. Receipt for new props shows 14-5/8(L&R)23 SS Thunderbolt. Appears to be the stock prop size for the 300 HPDIs. Didn't experiment with different props due to time constraints (needing to get boat ready for a vacation trip last week that rain canceled anyway.) However, open to hearing what others are doing and will try other props for more top end. Will get out this weekend and see what top end speed and RPMs are. I have the reverse radar arch with canopy and electronic box. Big wind resistence. |
I'm game for trying demo props from one of the OSO sponsors if any of you have a successful recommendation of 4 blade props.

So where are these 70 mph boats with twin 250's???

I know its not the same dynamic but the twin step 38 Top Gun picks up 10 -12 MPH just with the steps and no additional power |

If we are doing 60 -61 MPH with twin 225's on a straight bottom, I would think maybe a stepped hull with 250's has got to be close to 70 MPH... No ??

98, radar arch, wind shield, 225 Merc 3 liter 225's, 63mph
|
Ryan,
Can you make the real "scarab" logo the right size for the sides of the boat? How much? |
Is anybody else running the Yamaha 250's OX66's, if so what prop size and pitch should I run for a better mid/top end???
|
A friend has a 99 w/ Merc 250 EFI's. He is running Mirage 23's. Don't know his true top speed.

I haven't hit mid-60's since doing my sea trial 4 years ago in 40 degree weather. Would definitely consider a 4 blade prop suggestion from anyone running Yamaha 300hp HPDI's (2-stroke). |
I have many of the original SCARAB logos from Wellcraft. I can make them in any size and color you want.
|
'86 Scarab CC 30', twin Johnson V8 outboards, 4.0l, modified by Monty Racing. 380hp/340tq each. Swapped to Mercury CLE gearcases w/1.87:1 gear ratio spinning 26p Bravo 1's with 4 PVS holes each. 28" setback. No t-top. With this setup, it's run a best of 72mph on GPS. I think there are a few more MPH in it if I were to shorten the setback back to 24".

I just got mine home today, 19pitch 3 blade props, engines have fresh power heads, but need tuning. The mechanic that last worked on it disabled the oil injection, so I have to mix it...
I think after a tune up and maybe some 21p 3-blades it should see 60+... |
'98 scarab sport- completely re-done with brand new 300 HP yamaha- Boat runs 64mph. It has bottom paint and I'm sure this is taking many mph's off at this point. Running 3 blade props. I think getting that boat closer to the 70mph range is quite a feat.

How is everyone trimming their boats to achieve top speed?
|
Trim motors way way up!
|
Ok, this is my first outboard boat I've owned.
Can you do anything to make them faster??? I think a 19 pitch on a 250 Yamaha OX66 is too little of pitch? |
I have a 1988 scarab sport with 1996 merc 225 EFIs. The best i have seen is about 56MPH but my engines are old and tired. I am running 3 blade mirage 21p props.
|
I have a 98 with twin 250 Merc EFI's. If I go balls out, trimmed way up, 5900-6100 RPM's, I'm seeing 59- 61 MPH. I'm not happy with those speeds at all. I don't know the pitch or any other crap, but I do know I am a good 6 MPH slower than I was 5 years ago with everything the same. ( I know, it might be time to re-power, but that's alot of cash )

Not sure why every one with a center console fishing boat is so worried about speed, if speed is your desire sell your boat and get a Skater. there are plenty of people looking for good deals on 302 scarab's.

Any truth to lowering tabs some amount creating additional stern lift at higher speed?
|
Are any of you guys running jack plates? I can tell you where I plane off and cruise is not the same setting on the jack plates where I find the best speed. Trimming the motors up creates bow lift but gives up efficiency by using power to lift the bow.
X-dimension as the I/O guys call it, or transom height of the propshaft in relation to the bottom of the boat, can also make a big difference. By jacking the gearcase further out of the water you reduce hydrodynamic drag which means it goes faster. Before I went to jackplates, I did some testing with a drilled plate to move the motors up 3/4" at a time. I found that moving them up picked up top end speed to a point. I also found that as I moved them up, it took longer and longer to come on plane. Here's a picture of the plates. Simple T-6061 3/4" aluminum plate bolted to the brakets and the motor bolted to the plate with holes. At the best, I picked up 4 mph just playing with engine height. http://www.speedcraving.com/scarab/plates/plate-1.jpg |
What do you think a Scarab 302 would run with twin Mercury Optimax 300XS motors?
Thinking about trading my motors in... |
65 - 67ish
|
1999 302, twin 250 Johnson Ocean Runners , 23" Mirage plus 59mph (light load) 57mph (w/Full Fuel)
Sold (not missing the 2 strokes) . Nice boat/Hull |
I have a Powerboat review from 1999 and the 302 w/ Promax 300's ran 69.7,
I have 225 Opti's, I know there a different block than the 300 but they do not smoke at all, I think people say 2 stroke and think smoke but any DFI doesnt compare to the old EFI's and Carbs, Thanks to BILLR I have a Port Supply card and get approx 25% off my DFI oil! |
Pete, can i get a copy of that review?
