For years, my son and daughter have had conflicting schedules in the winter, keeping us from taking a real winter vacation. In Jan 2013 he will be a Senior, and she will be a freshman at the same college. Winter break is 6 weeks long, so we would like to plan a 3 week vacation (we have never taken longer than a week).

Not much into sailing but have thought about renting a trawler, small yacht/cruiser, ect. in the BVI or someplace similar, and bouncing around a bit. Have also had thoughts about renting a house/condo, along with a center console type boat to do our exploring (probably the route that we would go). Maybe even some kind of a combination (2 weeks in a house/1 on a boat).

Does anybody have any thoughts? We would like to explore it in order to make some kind of reservations a year or so in advance. We are not stuck on any one place.

You can do any of those things or any combination thereof in the BVI. If you're not into sailing, the Moorings Yacht Charter Company also offeres powered Kats (37' and 47') that will get you around a lot faster and in great comfort. A few other companies like Virgin Traders also offer powered yachts. You could do a week on the water and then rent a nice house or villa for the other two weeks. I would recommend staying on Virgin Gorda for a great selection of villas, restaurants, and an amazingly quaint and friendly environment. There are several companies that rent small center consoles in the 21' - 30' range. You can also do day charters if that suits you better. With three weeks you will be able to do and see tons of stuff and visit all the islands Jos Van Dyke, Anegada, Tortola, Cooper, Norman, etc. Peter Island Resort, Bitter End Resort or Little Dix Bay are all really nice places to stay on the higher end. Scrub Island resort is also really nice and is now a Marriott Autograph property which is great if you are on their rewards programme. We rented a 47 powercat and it was one of the best vacations yet........gonna do it again very soon!

I just booked the first week in February at Saba Rock BVI! I am so excited to finally get down there.
We are flying in through San Juan so we will do 2 days there and 6 out at Saba. They rent center consoles by the day out there fairly cheap so I plan to do a couple days exploring that way!
Saba also has their own water taxi that can take you to Prickly Pear (secluded beach), many different ports, and Bitter End Yacht Club.

Been to all of them and they were all good but nothing will compare to the BVI !!!!!!!!!!! Spent 9 day's on a sail boat island hopping and loved every minute of it . And no I'm not big on sail boats but it was great . Hope to go back next spring .
