Default GPS Suggestions

I am looking to acquire dash mounted GPS.
I would like a descent size screen, that will show clearly in the sunlight .
I don't fish so I don't need one of those multipurpose units.
What are you guys running that works well cruising at 35 knots ?
Thanks in advance for the reply !
Brian

Default Are you sure...

...you don't want sonar?

I think I have used all the major players in the field. For general ease of operation and ease to learn I like Garmin, but none of the major players are bad.

Garmin seems to have fewer maintenance issues, but my experience has been wonderful working with Raymarine service people.

I chose the garmin 740S.

Charts preloaded with coastal waters.
Weather map overlay via xm boater's weather service (3-4 levels to choose from)
Sonar- i'd rather have it than not.

Color touch screen that's easy to read in a decent sized package.

Has anyone tried the garman 620/640? Not sure of the number

I trying to pick between it and the 740, 740 will be a tight fit.

I got a new Raymarine A50 to replace my ancient Garmin GPS210 [black and white!, lol]

I have had great luck with there technical department answering questions, the unit works well and even comes with a "self demostration" mode, which is really helpful, it allows you to use the unit without saving any information, MUCH easier and quicker to learn as opposed to reading the 300 page manual

I would recommend Raymarine, a close 2nd would the Lowrance HDS series, a buddy has a HDS 7 in his boat and it works really well and the detail is incredible.

Garmin 740, has a flange mount, easy to install, no external antenna needed, updates fast. Nema 0183 output for your gps speedometer. I have one in the Skater.

Thank you all for the input.
There is so much out there to look at, it becomes overwhelming !
Now I have some descent data I can run with.
This is a great web site, everyone here is always ready to offer great information.

Glad to help, this IS a great site, I learned more off this site in SIX months than I did figuring it out "on my own" in a decade!

Good luck with the GPS!
