That would have never happened in Maryland. You would have been lucky to be as close as those hotels in the background to the course.
Thanks! I think???

We have always set up the race course with input from the Coast Guard. And we have "negotiated" with them to get as close as is reasonable. And while I will not discuss that course layout since I was not there. (And I will be accused of SBI bashing). It does tend to illustrate what "reasonable" is, and how quickly reasonable can turn into "Way to f'ing close!!!!". Note all the empty floats in the water, even assuming the 8000 lb race boat didn't crush a couple of 2000 lb center consoles, think of how the people on those floats would have come through...or not. I know Ed and Shawn personally and I know they would be devastated had they hurt a fan, it really is the last thing any of us want to happen.

Its a double edged sword. Being able to get close is the reason I go. They used to run pretty close to the beach and it was a great place to watch the race. About 5 years ago they moved it out and you can barley tell the smaller boats apart.
Last year my wife was with and was not comfortable with how close we were. I actually moved and positioned our boat with some protection from a large cruiser.
On the back straight at Sarasota, you can literally anchor right up to the edge of the course.

Did they blow a drive? The boat spun to the right on a left hand turn.

Glad no one was hurt.

Boat went right on a straightaway. Blew a motor or drive starboard side.
Hoping the crew chimes in.
