The 1998 382 is the same hull as my old 2002 382......650hp/side would hit 86-87. I propped mine for mid-range and cruised 3,500 at 58, WOT at 83 (flat water, 95 degrees).
Making a carbed 500 a 540ci with good heads/compression will get you in the 650hp range. Getting any of those boat to 85 means a spare drive needs to be in the garage.

Fuelin,
Do you want the cabin space? The BT will have that but is a BIG boat. (You trailer with a F250 right?).
Cig is a true 38, Fastec is a 38'.2" boat counting the swim (2feet?). Straight bottom cigs are great boats but take power to move, do you still boat mainly in the Ohio?
Need to decide what is important, speed or cabin room. As others said if you are used to the head room on your Sonic, may want to think about another one.

382 weight: 10,500 dry
BT weight: around 11,500-12,000 dry
Velocity, Active Thunder, Fountain will all run 80+ with 500's in 37-39 foot boats with AT having the largest cabin of the 3.
FYI: a 42 Fountain cabin was slightly SMALLER than my 382 cabin.

All good info posted above, but know what you are getting into if you want the mentioned boats to run at or near 80. If they are Bravo boats.... You will need to have a few (or more) spare drives sitting around, especially with the BT. Just sayin'
Good luck with your search. That's the best part of finding a new boat!!!

500 HP in the BT (stepped hull)
Loved all my go fast boats
If you want to see the three i had running this is a video i put together on the three bigger boats i owned http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSCquwf3SeY
They are all differnt and very cool boat i loved all three
Docking the BT SC was no problem after just a bit of experiance with it. I bought the BT 43' new, and I sold it with 410 hours on it. I did nothing but change the drive oil and engine oil I never had any drive issues but i was carfull getting on plane I ran the boat in some nasty water I agree at least XRs were needed but i had good luck with the brovos.
That said i blew a few drives on the CIG lol

If you stay on your boat the ONLY option is a Black Thunder. Once you go Black you never go back!
I run with quite a few friends BT's and love them. Ridden on and driven many. They are very fast hulls actually and handle the rough well. Coolermans run 130-140mph in the LOTO shootout in a 43BT!
If I had to own 1 boat instead of 2 it would be a Black Thunder.
