Stupid thing I did...what about you??

Okay, I said i would post this and I am making good now.

Bought new 4 stroke for the houseboat.
*****ed that Merc could not include a trim sending unit with an 8k outboard.
Went and bought the optional trim sending unit for 35.00.
Got home and wired it to the motor.
Realized that houseboat had no f'ing trim guage in the dash.
(Think I would have known that, right??)
There, are you happy now?? I posted it as promised....

What was the dumbest thing you ever did??

There has to be an old thread about stupid things.....

PhantomChaos 07-08-2002 11:06 PM

I've never done anything stupid. Gezzzzz. I'm perfect.

Waterfoul 07-08-2002 11:07 PM

When I rebuilt my motor, installed the oil temp sender in the water temp location, and the water temp sender in the oil temp location. Well, they give different signals to their gauges!!! I thought for weeks that I had an oil temp problem. NOT!!! Switched the senders to where they should be and the motor runs awsome. Oil temp is 210 at cruise and never gets past 230. Before I switched the senders it would go to 260 in 1 minute of on plane time. Never saw any water temp, now I see 150 all day long.

This was a long time ago, so don't hold it TOO much against me. I forgot to put a rod nut on. The suprising thing is it held together for almost 2 hrs.

Last week I bought a new trailer. When we took it down to the lake to swap from one trailer to the other, I forgot the drain plug. Water had completely filled the bilge and was running on the deck. While pulling it out, I thought "damn, the boat feels heavy", that is when it hit me. Thank god it was fresh water. I have the interior out of this boat, so I haven't had a chance to fire it to see if everything is all right.

Rambunctious 07-09-2002 08:28 AM

just this past Sunday.

Always got frustrated because i did everything on the boat while the family and inlaws enjoyed themselves. So i am working to include my wife more in the duties.

so. i start the engines, set their trims to 1/2 up to pull away from our beach mouring and put her in the driver seat. this time I'll walk up to get the anchor and my wife can move us out "to sea" while I put the anchor away. simple enough for her, but guess not me.

I'm walking the anchor and rode along the starboard side till i get to the windshield. then i I guess I plan to tippytoe on the 1" rail till i get to the rear seat to step in (while holding the anchor for some reason) . well the marine antenna is right in the way and the rode is on the wrong side of it. cluster f@#$@#. now I am waving the left arm like riding a bull and the anchor is about to bash the side of the boat. I grab the side glass and strain it to 99% capacity (whew) and procede to slip horse over carriage into the water with the anchor in tote. (the water was only 4 feet deep) WHY DID I HAVE THE ANCHOR IN HAND!!!! for some reason I was so flustered that i tried to throw the anchor onto the sun pad before getting myself into the boat. finally get in as wife was laughing, (and me too)

only thing this was 4th weekend and we had just counted a new record of 187 boats along this beach shoreline. oh well. good thing i have the only yellow/black/white boat out there. NO ONE WILL REMEMBER ME RIGHT:rolleyes:

next time. back to the old way. loosten the anchor rode. get back in the driver seat, bump the boat up to the anchor. lift it in myself and off we go.....!!

Gumbydammit 07-09-2002 08:53 AM

Ramb...: That was a pretty good one! No ROD nut?? Oy! I think we have all forgotten the plug at least once:D :D :D :D :D :D

Gary Anderson 07-09-2002 09:23 AM

Sunk my Sea Doo Explorer (RIB) twice in a week. Once in the lake, once on land.
Put it in w/o drain plug, filled the hull and motor. Pulled it out, drained it. Removed plugs and cranked it to remove water from motor. Got a face full of bilge water, oil, gas. Those things REALLY spray w/o the plugs in.
Left it on trailer for a week with drain plugs in (wont forget them again). 10" of rain and storms that week caused the front to fall off block (bow down now), and fill AGAIN with water.
I didn't get sprayed clearing the block the second time.

Cuda.............Did something similar to that one long (long) time ago.

Lived in Oldsmar (near Tampa), and the condos had access to a river that was at the top of Tampa Bay. (had a Glastron SSV 176 then). Launched the boat, but, had to go idle speed only down the stream to cause no wake.......... for some reason the in-floor ski hatch came off and slid forward. Thats because it was full of water:eek:  then had to run it up on plane to get the water out by natural flow. Had lots and lots of pissed off people on the docks.

Next week............the "Dangers of tubing with a loose ski line"

290PQ 07-09-2002 09:47 AM

Standing on the bow of my boat I give the anchor a mighty heave ho I feel something on my leg, look down to see the anchor line tightening up around my leg! Pretend nothing happenend (don't want the wife and friends to know how stupid I was). As I'm getting back to the cockpit the wife say's What's wrong with your leg why is it bleeding? So of course I had to confess and it was the joke of the day!!
Good thing it was only 4ft deep!

Got Married… . j/king:D

Drove pops 40’ houseboat with one motor down & one that kicked up everytime I hit reverse for an entire summer needless to say we repainted that winter :o :)

& yes been there to Cuda…..

2biguns 07-09-2002 10:05 AM

I had to repower my Z-29 Donzi last winter. Without checking, I ordered one standard-rotating engine and one counter-rotating one.

Got the engines installed. Hit the key on the port engine and it purred like a kitten. Starboard engine would not start. Pulled everything off and reinstalled and still would not crank. Finally called the engine manufacturer in a panic thinking I had a bad engine. He asked about whether the "bad" engine had a timing gear or chain.

FINALLY figured out that the old engines were BOTH standard-rotating, just running the outdrives in opposite directions. Had to pull the counter-engine, send it back to the factory, pay clean up fee and reinstall another engine. Of course, it cranked the first try.

1-Wife comes up with idea to video my boat making a pass. Fire up motor & take off, planing to drive out a way & come back by friends boat. As I look back to see if I have gone far enough away I see a strange thing following us. Turns out I forgot to get the anchor before I took off. Turns out only thing that got videoed was driving off with anchor & stopping to pull back in boat.

2-Had hard time trying to figure out why motor is not running very good. Turns out instead of timing at 30 degrees, I had set at 0

3-Installed a sub woofer speaker right behind CD player. When ever volume was turned up above whisper the thump from sub would cause the CD to skip.

4-I Was working in garage & wife had come home while I had gone in house & parked truck in garage. When I got back out to garage I saw truck in garage & got pissed. Went in house to get keys to get truck out of garage so I could continue working. As I was backing truck out I for some reason did not think about shutting the door. After truck was backed out of garage without drivers side door, I was really pissed.

5-In garage I have a work lite that is on a cord reel. I had pulled the light out & had cord run over to boat while I was working under the deck. Area I was in was tight & had to twist around to get in position to work on fitting. Whilel I was working wife said see was going to store. After I heard truck start ( I do not remember if same one without door) I heard the ratchet sound the drop light reel makes when pulling cord out. Shortly after I remember hearing that sound I realize that I am twisted in the drop light cord. I feel the cord getting tight around my neck, then everthing goes dark. Turns out wife had caught drop light wire on mirror as she backed out of garage, Thank God cord broke at reel & mirror let go of end of cord.

6-Ok, I know there are alot more, just can not think of them now.

Allan4 07-09-2002 07:16 PM

I do some stupid stuff at times. Recently, I tried to pull my ski boat out of the garage with my commercial 60" zero turn rider and put one of the guide arms thru the garage wall.........and ripped the cover of the boat.......You know you are a s*** head when you are thankful for rub rails when the boat is still in storage.....:D

Plugs......we've all done that before.........

Oh and, I about sank my seadoo from doing too many tail stands and filling the engine compartment up with water.......sinking might have been a better option than the burnt bearings.....  :D

mopower 07-09-2002 07:32 PM

OK Turbojack, you win. All I did was drop my boat on the ramp. Seems as though my son who was 10 at the time was just trying to help when he released the ratchet on the winch. As I backed down the rampI heard a strange noise  I checked left and right hand mirrors...nothing wrong , next I hit the brakes. Now it sounded like I was going over rumble strips on the highway. At this point I looked in the inside mirror just in tine to see the bow going up in the air:eek: Luckily the bow stayed on the trailer. I was able to winch it back on the trailer , and leave red faced:o

Turbojack 07-09-2002 07:46 PM

Aaawww experiences. Got another one.

Was going to meet some people at their lake house & was pullin my jet boat behing girlfriends motor home. It was dark & we somehow ending up going down wrong road. Finally stopped when road stopped. Road was not wide enough to turn whole setup around so came up with bright idea to unhook boat, turn motor home around then swing boat around & hook back up. Got motor home turned with no problems. When we started to turn boat around is started going down hill. With 4 or 5 of us trying to stop boat it was headed for a house. Good part was trailer hit a dip & stopped. Bad part was winch cable broke & boat continued down hill. Between all of us we were able to put boat part way back on trailer, back motor home to trailer & hooked up. With about 3 people sitting on bow of boat we were able to get back to road. After about 20 takeoffs & slam on brakes was able to get boat all the way back on trailer. We then make it to friends house with not more excitment.

Gumbydammit 07-09-2002 08:06 PM

Turbo... you take the cake man!!!!

I saw a guy do the trailer thing while sledding in Maine on a 6 foot base........(ooops I drove in and cant turn around now) Wow, what a ***** to back up a snowmobile trailer 6 miles in the dark!

:)

Turbojack, dont feel bad. My cousin actually put the new pads in his car BACKWARDS!! His reaoning was that they would last longer if he used the metal side.
When I "fixed" his error by making him go get new rotors and pads again, he had them in allright......with the friggin anti-squeal on the pad surface!!!

Good to see that not all us are perfect.

:D :D :D :D

mopower 07-09-2002 08:15 PM

And these people actually operate power boats too:eek: !!!
That's a scarey thought:eek:
