Ok lets learn from our frends on OSO. I will start with the first question? Whats the first thing that happens when You put your boat in gear? This is not a joke so lets hear from You. An please add more questions after this one has the right answer. Artie

ummmmmmm.....the prop spins and the boat moves.

akaboatman 08-21-2012 07:29 AM

Nope

befu 08-21-2012 07:42 AM

Umm, just put mine back together. Move the lever which pulls on the cable to move the linkage on the bracket attached to the exhaust. That moves the neutral switch(s) and another cable going to the transom assembly. Transom assembly arm pivots and moves the arm on the shifter of the alpha outdrive. Clutch moves and engages causing the props to spin (if running, otherwise shifting is a bit pointless). Spinning props cause a thrust cone of water to move drawing water in one side and pushing it out the other. If thrust force is sufficient to overcome other forces, boat will accelerate and start to move.

akaboatman 08-21-2012 07:55 AM

Ok I know everyone thinks this is a joke. I was at Ship Island a friend started His twin eng boat. I was standing next to the boat in chest deap water. I'm 6'4" He puts the boat in gear an the props start pulling the water to then. An Me. I start screeming an beat on His boat to stop Him. This was a few years ago. I new better an thought He did. Some people mite learn from this if they just don't know. Artie

I begin mentally "scanning" my surroundings as to not hit anything and watchout for boats heading in my direction.

This is something you do when you put the boat into gear, because you want to. If you forget, it will not happen.

Something that happens when you put the boat into gear has to be physical in my thoughts. Doesn't matter if I put it in gear or my one year old pushes the lever into gear.

I am guessing that you are talking about the fact that these outdrives do not create water and shoot it out from the prop. The prop displaces water and it has to come from somewhere, namely from in front of the propellor. At a slow speed, it will pull water from a wider cone in front of it. I deal with this on air handling equipment for dust collection. Pushed air will travel in a straight line pretty far, but pulled air will not pull in from that far away, much wider intake arc. Happens with freighters also. Can suck a boat under with that prop pulling that much water under the hull.

Closer?

Alpha= shift interrupt switch. SO when I put me boat into gear the first thing that happens is the motor cuts :evilb:

I though it was funny... :angry-smiley-038:

Safty is wehn you put yore landyard on befour you started yore engin.

Artie's safety thread would be a good place to ask some rules of the road questions...especailly if you are near some major port instead of just the local marina. Inland rules have even more weird stuff.
Here's a simple one...what does 3 short blasts of the horn mean?

if properly adjusted and working it should only interrupt when shifting out of gear:party-smiley-004:

DucBoy 08-21-2012 09:18 AM

If it is a new boat, it drops $30M in value....

Been reading so many schematics, I do not know the names of all these parts yet. Only other boat was a small egg beater. (I learned that one here!)

Thought those switches were to keep the engines from starting in gear. I am getting there, but so much to learn. Still haven't found the brakes on the dang thing yet..... :hijack:

Good thread.

1) Sip of cocktail
1a) Start engines
2) Sip of cocktail
2a) Put in gear
3) Hopefully you've had enough of cocktail to not spill...if not take another sip
3a) Mash both throttles
4) Make sure kids are back on board
4a) finish cocktail while underway

Once cocktail is empty, repeat process.

inthetundra 08-21-2012 09:34 AM

3 balls...and we're not talking about your inbred cousin that works in the sideshow at the county fair.
