2 things are obvious, those thee love it and will defend it no matter what and the shoot out is awesome. I've been to LOTO twice, it wasn't anything to write home about, nor did I really see any issues with it either, seemed like a great place, other than my points of reference are the Great Lakes being from Michigan.

When did everyone turn into giant vaginas about cruiser wakes??? That's really what I want to know :D

We live in KC and started going to LOTO in the mid 60's. Mom and dad sat us kids down in 1970 and proposed buying a small place at the lake. They explained that other vacations, movies, restaurants and extra perks would stop if we bought a cabin. We jumped on the idea and for years every Friday at 5:30 we were in the car headed to "the lake", it became a way of life. As a family we worked and worked on that little house, spent hundreds and hundreds of hours in several boats skiing, tubeing and having fun. Seeing my dad work extra hard at his job to afford and achieve his dream of a lake house had a huge influence on me growing up. Going to the lake kept me out of trouble, taught me responsibility and helped me develop a strong work ethic.

My first job was on an island at the lake, (Hawaiian Island) pumping gas and building docks. I bought a 12' hydroplane with the money I earned. I continued to work at the lake all throughout high school. I graduated to drag boats and spent as much time as I could at the lake. After college my girlfriend (future wife) and I would go every weekend. We did the party cove thing in the 80's. In the mid 80's we sold the cabin and dad and I went together and built a bigger house. In the 90's we had kids and the cycle started over again.

Our kids are now teenagers and have all grown up with the lake. They work hard, get good grades and stay out of trouble. I give the lake a lot of credit for that. Some kids have worked at the lake, one has bought a jet ski with their own money at age 15. His goal is to be a Water Patrol officer just so he can live at the lake.

Its not all about waves, water and stupid people. LOTO is a way of life. Is the water quality better at some other lakes, yes. Do some other lakes have less traffic and waves, yes. Do other lakes have better restaurants, maybe, maybe not. Do other lake have better weather, yes to that too. Has the lake changed for the worse over the years, I guess it depends on your point of view. But it doesn't matter, LOTO is something you either have in your blood or you don't. I suppose in a lot of ways its like Vegas, some people love it, some people hate everything about it.

LOTO is one of a kind. Where else do you have have cruisers, offshore boats, skiers, fishermen, pontoons, jet skis, sailboats, retired people, weekenders and locals all coming together on a 80 year old non corps lake with 55,000 acres of water and 1150 miles of shore line. Sure their are issues, but for the most considering the size and number of people it all works. No one could have predicted what LOTO would become. Their were no city planners to guide it future, it evolved on its own over time and it will continue to evolve. Some will be good and some will be bad.

I just hope my future grand-kids will enjoy it as much as I have.

Nort,

Those are temporary no wake buoy's at the start of the shootout No Wake area. They are only valid during that actual time frame of the regatta permit. In the instance of the video the event was done for the day.

I remember a couple years ago following the OSS races half of the spectator fleet was still rafted up after the event was over and the water patrol literally started doing passes back and forth on plane to get the boats to start moving.

I am not disagreeing that we certainely have some azz hat drivers but at the end of the day when regatta permit is over it becomes a free for all legally in the regatta permit no wake zone.

Great write-up! I think a lot of people out there have a similar connection to the body of water they enjoy visiting time and time again. My family has been going to LOTO since the 60's and I've enjoyed it since the 70's. Our family lake house was built in the early 80's and it's truly a special place for me, especially considering all the memories we've made there as a family. We'll continue to take the good with the bad that the lake has to offer.

I hate walking 27 steps to my dock with my 40' Skater on the lift next to my cruiser next to my 3 jet skiis.

I hate having 6 on the lake restaurant/bars 5 miles by water from my house.

I hate having my kids have a blast all day tubing/skiing/kneeboarding in my cove.

It really sucks to sit on my deck 50' from the water and drink martinis as I grill my filet mignon to perfection.

I freakin hate that place but I will force myself to go back weekly during the summer.

How many awards have you won for being the biggest *******?

You really should not be drinking the water out of the lake.
You can drink beer out of your cooler at LOTO on the docks at the bar.

The "third most dangerous body of water" could very well be. That said, take a look at the accidents and remove the jetskiis from it and the stats may look a little different. add into that the number of people and boats that are on the lake, and the numbers turn. You probably are one of those that think that general aviation is safer than driving because you like to fly.

Why the hard on for Lake of the Ozarks? I don't get it.

Dude, the quality of my hull makes zero difference in whatever that sludge/scum ring is that attaches itself to my boat every time I've been there. Something there, probably the semen from all the cashed out condoms floating in party cove, attaches itself to the waterline & it takes some serious effort to get it removed. It ain't my nut either & they aren't my rubbers, nor anyones with me.
I am not sure on the "cheap asses" comment, but I am far from cheap & the lake does have a higher percentage of folks with larger wheelbases than found most lakes.
Taking the jet skis out of the equation is rediclious. That is like saying the lake would be clean if all the septic tanks didn't leach into the lake, it would smooth if there were less cruisers. Duh!
I do fly & it is not safer than driving. It sure is cooler & takes less time than driving does.
back to the question as to why LOTO is so great, well, it isn't. Just because it is popular doesnt make it great. It makes it more convenient to more of the population.
All that being said, every time I have went, I had a good time despite all that stuff that makes me not like LOTO. I simply would not want that all the time. I love Table Rock for all it is & is not. I'm certainly glad it is NOT like Lake of the O.
