OT - Who here smokes cigarettes?
I got this notice in my mailbox yesterday that the US Post Office had a package for me. When I went to pick it up, I thought I was going to be interrogated by the FBI. The package was from St. Petersburg, Russia, and they made me open it in front of them.
Surprise, surprise, surprise. I ordered cigarettes for $19.95 a carton off the internet from an Indian reservation in Texas, and this is what they sent me. The Marlboro packs are in Russian...... Your tax dollars - not at work! Cigarettes are now $70 a carton in NY City. Jennifer |
Whoa, whoa....WOW!!!  -- 70 bucks?
Holy Chit?! Are you serious, I buy cartons of Marlboro for 24-25 bucks here! I can tell you this much--the smokes will not be the same as you're used to. When I was traveling Europe, Marlboro having the name recognition that it does can be found in almost any counrty, but it is all locally grown and packaged under license. When I ran out of the ones I brought from the states and had to buy some there, I was really dissappointed...tasted like chit and harsh as hell! I hope the ones from Russia are better. Hate to tell you, though, you probably paid the 20 bucks for like $2.00 worth of smokes there! |
Ahhh - the light bulb goes on. I was starting to wonder why I felt STONED! Okay.
Yeah, they do kinda suck. But, I have four cartons. Oh no. Jennifer |
Hey I happened to see your blurb on Rush...
I am totally jealous!!!!! I've been waiting for this tour for years...they finally put out a new album, are going on tour but aren't coming anywhere near here. And I mean NOWHERE NEAR! :( Oh well! |
You smoke?
Shame on you! You know better that. My Dad smoked for 60+ years, never got cancer and only quit when the doctor had to put him on full oxygen due to Emphysema. His weight went from 225 to 120 before he died. My Mom smoked too, right up till she died. I'm and ex-smoker myself. Smoked for 20+ years. One day I woke up and had trouble breathing my chest hurt and my heart rate was way up. I quit that day and haven't touched one in 4 years. Breathing improved and the chest pains stopped, still have heart trouble. Quit now while you still can. |
Hey..you can afford it..........so kick up the money and save the state...not the state of Russia
Do they taste funny?????? |
I'm on Zyban

While I was stuck in traffic this am, this was the topic on the local talk radio show. Apparently, this is a tax dodge. People are starting to get notices from the state for taxes due when purchasing discount cigs online. Caveat Emptor.

|
Jennifer,
I must say, I am surprised to hear you are a smoker. I thought you did marathons, bodybuilding, etc. I would think being a smoker would be hard on the lungs being so athletic. How long have you been a smoker, btw? It is a bad habit; we all have our own vices though. :( The cost alone would make me want to quit though. lol |
Unfortunately I do smoke. I hate it, but it is hard to kick. I 've tried the patch, gum, and hypnosis.
I smoke Doral lights, which tastes just like a Marlboro Light, but just burns a little faster. Filled out something that came in the mail, and now they send $3 off coupons all the time. Carton runs 19 to 22 dollars here.(same area as Baja Daze) I promised myself this morning I wouldn't smoke more than two packs today. It will be close. |

Hey smokers !!
Big news flash ! Guess what ! Smoking is not good for you !It causes cancer, bad breath, disgusting butts & ashes, burnt clothing, loss of income, smelly clothes & hair, burns on people, yellow teeth, stinky car, segregation from non smokers, shortness of breath, fires, polution, 2nd hand smoke, irritates your throat, ages your skin, makes your eyes water, smokers cough, looks stupid, and worst of all a cigarette could burn a hole in your boats upholstery ! Don't be a loser. Quit now !! Bo knows |

I've tried everything to quit. I REALLY wish I could. In the meantime, I guess I'll just have to move to Europe. EVERYONE smokes EVERYWHERE. |
Bo~
I am sure many of them want to and are trying. If it were that easy to quit, there probably wouldn't even be any smokers around anymore. |
Jen~
Don't move to Europe....just keep trying to quit. I wish it were easier. :( Good luck |
Hey Bo, glad you pointed that out. I didn't know that. Think I'll go ahead and quit now with that hot off the press knowledge.
Here's a newsflash for you........the sun rose in the east today. |

The Missus and I both quit a year ago last February. She patched, I went cold turkey. Talk about a bad 8 weeks. I had 2 weeks of physical addiction, then 2 weeks of thinking I wanted a smoke. After that it was just remembering that I don't smoke anymore. 10 years of bad habit gone - no slips.
The Missus went ballistic a few times, but she got through it as well. She was a heavier smoker, so I suppose it was tougher for her. Good luck if you chose to quit. It helps to have a good reason. I tried a few times just to see if I could, never made it more than a few months. This time, the Missus told her Mom that I wouldn't support her desire to stop - I showed them both by quitting the next day. Then it was put up or shut up. Sounds bad, but it worked. |
i quit a year ago. SMoked 1-2 packs a day. WHen i finally quit i cut back to parliment menthols. Anything was better than the newports i was smoking. Actually i dunno before newports it was camels (non filtered, my dad smoked em so we woudl buya few cartons and geta discount) and before those it was reds. I needed to quit.
As for the russian marlboros, They suck. The actual russian brands are better. Don't ask (i've traveled a hell of alot). But lemme tell you Gallouas (spelled wrong) they are french in blue packs. Those cigs will tear your balls off!!!! |
Hey Jennifer,
I've got your solution, CANDY STICKS ! :D They can't call them cigarettes any more because they cause kids to smoke. They're a lot cheaper than the real thing. They won't do much for your waistline or teeth but may quench the urge. I feel people should be able to smoke if they want, but if it's just because they are addicted to them then it's all right to try and help them quit. If you want to quit just post it here and I'm sure you will find lots of support. You seem like a very strong person and if you wanted to quit I am sure you could. Nothing worth while comes easy! Dan BTW, I also have "Chocolate Cigarettes". :D |

Candyman~
I remember those candy cigarettes! I used to love those things!! (i'm kinda glad they don't call them that anymore; i don't think i would want my kids walking around pretending to be smoking...........lord, that's what i used to do! lol I used to think I looked so cool waving that candy around. lol  :D ) Now..you say you have CHOCOLATE ones??? *perk* Being a choco-holic I could start a new addiction with those! haha Hope you're having a wonderful summer. |
SMOKING IS BAD FOR YOU AND THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU. SMOKING HAS CAUSED THE DEATHES OF SOME CLOSE FRIENDS OF MINE.... I WISH MY X WIFE WOULD START SMOKING !!!
|
SunSeeker,
I'll tell you how I quit. No, it wasn't cold turkey, only at the end. Back in '86 New Jersey Board of Health enacted laws against smoking in the workplace. Every buisness had to come up with a smoke reduction plan leading to a totally non-smoking environment with in three years. The company I worked for started off by allowing us to smoke for the first five minutes of each hour, one cigerette every hour or as many as you could suck down in five minutes. We were not allowed to go outside to smoke between scheduled smoke periods. After about eight months they went to the first five minutes of each odd hour (7,9,11,1,3,5, etc.). I know it sounds strange but it really wasn't hard. It didn't take long before we became accustomed to the schedule. After a while I found I could go all night without smoking then I could go all weekend without. That's the way I was until I quit. I went from two packs a day down to one pack very four days. |
To all the people how are not now or ever been smokers - please keep your smartass comments about smoking to yourself. I smoked for 5 yrs. Then one thing that pissed me off more than anything was the non-smokers comments about how bad it was and "I can't believe YOU smoke!" Being a smoker isn't that uncommon.
I now choose to REFRAIN from smoking when not out drinking socially. It took a long time to get to this point. BTW - Michigan legislature just passed a bill that will increase the state tax on packs of cigarettes from $0.75 to $1.25. Apparently smokers are the cause of the budget deficit. We already pay close to $4.00 a pack for premium brands. |
You can do it Jennifer,
I started smoking when I was 8 years old. I just celebrated my 4th year of indepenance from nicoteen on July 4. I was smoking 3-1/2 packs a day and was 39 years old when I quit. I used Zyban and it worked. You really have to want to quit though. I just got tired of wheezing myself to sleep. I figured I have saved over $26,000 since I quit. |
BTJ88,
I do not and never have made "smart ass" comments to smokers. I said that I couldn't believe she smokes since Jen is an ex-model and models are usually very health and image conscious. I also don't preach the evils of smoking to those that do. If you want to smoke, go right ahead just don't do it in my house, in my cars or on my boat. Ever since I lost both parents in three years to smoking related illness's and my daughter has asthma, which is aggrivated by tobacco smoke, I have a different outlook. |
I'd also like to add that if I offended anyone I apologize.
That was not my intention. It's obvious I struck a nerve with at least one OSO member. |
