Performance open bow
Been lurking for a long time but finally signed up as a member.
We have decided it is time to buy a bigger boat and my wife has agreed to a performance model if I can also find an open bow ( don't kill the messenger, sometimes compromises must be made). I have researched on the Internet and found some 27' opens like Nordic and baja but was would like something 29'+. We boat from our cabin on a very large lake in n. Idaho that is generally always choppy and can see 4 - 5' waves when the wind comes up. I understand an we won't be sitting in the bow during the big waves but will be able to use it other times. What suggestions can you give me? Want something newer, maybe 2007 and up but am opened to all suggestions. Thx. :thankyouthankyou::thankyouthankyou: |
Sunsation makes a 32 and 36 mid-cabin open bow.

I had an Eliminator Daytona 26' that had a walk thru bowrider. Boat ran 100+
I now have a 30' Daytona with center cabin & bowrider up front. This boat also does 100+ Wife got bowrider and I got my speed. Only problem is the wifeygoverner cuts in around 70 |
I'll sell you my rage

I have a 2009 custom built velocity 290 sc mid cabin open bow with a merc 600 sci that does 84 mph all day long with 93 hours on it . always dry stored .
|
you can probably find a mid cabin, but a true open bow thats over 25-26 feet long will be tough. But crownline does have a LX or LSX model but I think its only 24feet.
Also check out a formula SUN SPORT. not an open bow, but just check it out, your wife may like it. |
Formula makes a 310 open bow along with the new 350 open bow. More day cruisers than performance boats, though.

We have a 35 Nordic mid cabin open bow with twin 496's in our fleet. Cabin has a toilet, sink, fridge and microwave. The kids love riding in the front. Will run 82 mph on the gps. Best of both worlds really.

http://www.sunsationboats.com/models/ http://www.sunsationboats.com/forums...ded-Paint-(red) http://www.sunsationboats.com/forums...ing-To-Florida I spent 3yrs searching out the right bowrider/mid cabin. Hands down, Sunsation was the way to go, for me. Crownline sells their LPX/SS versions which go upwards of 25ft now. I actually started in a 225 LPX with a 502. If you're going to be bobbing through 4-5ftrs don't waste your time with a traditional commercial builder. Islanders are nice. Nordic, Velocity, and the other west coast boats are great but it's nice to be able to shut the cabin doors to get out of the elements. And that's why I found myself locked and loaded with Sunsation. Great handling. Outstanding rigging. Awesome build. Not to mention A+ factory service to even used Sunny owners. Just my .02 |
lavey craft makes a 24,26,and a 2750 all available mcob
great build quality, and a great ride |

I researched Nordic but biggest I found was 27'. What year is yours? Our neighbor has a 27' which is a nice boat but we are looking for something larger. Thx |
Didn't DONZI make a 35' ZR open bow/half cabin model?
|
Nordic heat/rage should come in with a 28ft. having lived in the nw and Idaho not being far away I personally would check out the Sunsations. I ran a buddies equally powered Nordic and walked him. so, knowing I have the speed it also was clearly visible I had the better ride. no knocks against the Nordic as they are stellar rigs bit again I digress AMD go back to why I bought a Sunsation.
|
I know nothing about sunsation but will start researching. Thx
|
Nordic 35 Flame has a snap on cover for the bow and a power cabin door. No worries about the elements.
I saw a Ilmor powered 35 in Idaho - might be worth checking out if its close to you. It would give you a good idea of how good the build quality is on the Nordics. |

Handles the rough great Send me a pm...The boat is not listed anywhere but I will sell it. |
28 Donzi ZXO; 35 Donzi ZR Open; Sunsation...
Velocity also makes them. From a fit/finish/overall boat thought out I think Sunsation makes a hell of a ride. Donzi does a great job as well. I haven't been on the 35 ZR but it looks pretty bad ass from the pictures. I have the 28 and it's great. Velocity seems to have added their open bow as an afterthought. The 'out west' boats like Nordic are built differently, they are basically all open. I never opted for them because on the east coast that interior would be a mold fest. So... depends on where you live and how you want the boat. If you want a sealed cabin I'd opt for an east coast version... If you want the open style and live out west go with one of them. |

I am definitely partial, but I think Sunsation makes the nicest large (32') open bow on the market. Others seem like they are "cut out" of the bow, with Sunsation it is nicely integrated and the finish is excellent. Mine even has bow filler cushions if you want to sleep on it.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I will start researching all the mcob brands I didn't know about before this post.

My wife and I had the same argument over boats. I was looking at other boats (36 Spectre cats then 28' catdecks) but she kept vetoing me. We ended up with our Baja 292 Islander. Neither of us liked having to walk through the cabin to get up front but we still wanted a decent size cuddy for our son. We ended up with the best of both worlds. For the size of waves you said you'll be encountering, I wouldn't bother looking at the 288 Sunny as they are pretty small compared to others and look at the 32's instead.
|
Really depends on how much you want to spend and what type of ride you want. MOST MCOBs are 23 degree deadrise, which is not going to cut it decent size water, 1' chop, no problem, 2' chop, very bumpy, 3' or bigger, you're going to come out all beat up, stuff breaks too!
To me it comes down to two boats, the Laveycraft and Sunsation. I've owned a 29' Laveycraft and have ridden in a 32' Sunny in rough water. The Laveycraft is a hair smaller than the 32 Sunny. The Laveycraft is the better rough water boat, but the Sunny is better looking IMO, I purchased the Laveycraft. If you want 2007 or newer, I would spend A LOT of time researching and arranging for sea trials on boats you are considering. This takes time and $$$. A used 29 Laveycraft is few and far between, lots of 32 Sunnys to chose from. There are several Laveycraft 2750s, it's a pretty big boat, about the same size as most manufacturers 29s, Laveycraft doesn't include the swim platform in their length, while most others do. If you are boating in smaller water most of the time the Eliminator Eagle is a real nice boat for the $$, but again it's 23 degree deadrise. Smaller water opens up a lot more options are if you are willing to take a pounding. Good Luck |
Nor-tech 298. Almost 10' beam. Great rough water boat.

Profile and now NRG build a 30 MCOB boat. With a single 8.2 (425hp) it runs well and looks good. This one is on Lake of the Ozarks and for sale.
|
Does the Lavey Craft have drop down bolsters?
|
I have had 2 Advantage MCOB's and have been very happy with them. I think they make a 30' and a 32'

Here is my 2010 2750 Lavey. Its actually 28' 6". MCOB with a 555 and 4.0 Whipple, 1068 HP, 10 hours in motor. Looking for a 35-38 cruiser for grandkids. Everything I have is for sale. PM me if interested

I have a Hallett 270 that is the best riding lake boat that I have had. They also make bigger boats. The 270 is a full 27 not including the swim platform. My last boat was a Rage which was just under 25 including the platform. Good luck with your search.
There are pictures of mine and several other nice Halletts in the Hallett forum. |
