But the friggin manufacturer would not sign the papers since he 'heard' cats cannot be done???

I thought I paid like $65.00 for it 2 years ago. Did it all myself. called the coats guard. They talked me through the whole thing. It's just like everything else on boats. If someone thinks they can make a buck doing something, they'll try to make ten!

Mine was only $108 and I did it myself. It was easy and there is a 1-800 number to the CG document center for any questions.

OK, an update on this thread -

I questioned the $ 500.00 fee and they broke it down to a $300.00 closing cost and $200.00 for USCG documentation . .

still, $300.00 closing costs ?

I still dont remember there being any closing costs when I financed my last boat, though that was back in 1995 . . . is this $300.00 now a common thing for banks / lenders to charge ?

Go to the website I gave above and call the National Vessel Documentation Center NVDC (aka Coast Guard) and they will send you the paperwork in the mail. Fill them according to instructions; enclose a check as per instructions; and it'll be back to you within 30 days. They have no problem with you calling them to discuss properly filling out the paperwork. Otherwise, pay the paper pushers up to 350+ dollars to do it for you.....

Less than $100 to have a pre-documented boat transferred into your name. Just go to the site, sign some forms and send them in. Very easy to do it yourself. No fee for renewal.
