Wow, 380 HP out of the 6.0 Liter. Mercruiser only pulls 320 out of their 6.2, interesting.

You look at the offshore boats of the 80's and early 90's out there, and they were running with motors making 365 to 420 HP mostly. You are now in that range with the small blocks. Too bad an Alpha can not be toughened up to take around 400 HP. they are so easy to rig and install - just think of all those big block TRS boats without power in them. A 350 to 400 HP small block/Alpha setup would give good room under the hatch, lose a bunch of weight and probably balance well. Oh-well, gotta get my 272 tested out more before I start the winter projects on it again....

Sprink, I remember the "big bang" theory thread,t hat was an impressive build. A cheap "ebay" turbo kit and it was a 4.8L, not even the 5.3 that they pulled that much HP out of. Give it a few more years, they will be all over by then probably.

Torque is in the mid 400 # range. The two big factors that push these engines into the big numbers are cylinder head/direct injection along with the variable cam timing. Given the engine management systems that are available today we win as consumers with this technology.

Remember also that the LSA Cadillac engine is what sits atop of a custom ZF gear box to create the "7" outboard...the worlds most powerful at 557 Horse Power!!

The best part about that Big Bang Article was that they thought they had a 5.3L block the whole time until they tore it down. They where well into the 700hp+ range with an ebay turbo and about 70 dyno pulls. The block held together fine.
Befu, just so you know, alphas will live behind 350hp sbc's in your 272. Don't hammer it out of the hole and learn how to throttle when you're in the air It's really the torque that kills them.

Yeah, I am not really worried about my 272 with 300 +/- HP in it. I was more thinking along the lines of the older 30' scarabs or the Formula SR1 292 or 311's that you see out there that have been parted for the drives, transom assm, transmissions and motors.

350 - 400 HP small blocks would seem like a nice little setup for a 60 - 65 mph boat. SBC are just so cheap to build, and I figure I put used drives and transom assemblies on my boat for about $1000 total. $5,000 to $6,000 grand total to repower a 30' scarab for 60mph is really cheap. But that is just that much more weight straining those drives.

I picture a 30' scarab with the small blocks leaving tons of room in front of the engines. Remove the back seat and slide the whole thing backwards at least 2', maybe 3'. Open up the cockpit space some more for extra seating. Might just be me due to 9 kids.... Hopefully by next summer we are back down to just our own 5, we will see.

I don't know the weight difference but my 32 Sunny does 72 with the 320 6.2 Mercs, I would imagine these bad boys would be even stronger. It should be a killer setup!

I agree, it is time for a merc racing version of the LS! IMO they could do a lot with this engine, esp if they go with the larger bore version.

Weight IS hp loss, no question

With a little tuning the non catalyzed 6.0 VVT will make 400hp at 5300rpm and just a hair under 500lbs torque @ 4100rpm. The torque curve is extremely flat thanks to the VVT. We've replaced several 454's with this package. Here's one we're doing right now. This old woody will be a rocket! Volvo's late to the party with this combo but at least they showed up!
