Default driver training vs adding horsepower ?

Anyone see 5th Gear on Velocity this weeks show where they added different performance products to a car and had the driver do timed laps with each product ? Ultimately the best time the driver did was with the car in stock config. and a racer/instructor along. It was significantly better and cheaper then with any of the performance products

This led me to thinking about lessons from Tres Martin. Typically he's looked at for providing instruction more from a safety standpoint vs. gaining speed. But what could he do for a boater vs. adding pure horsepower and/or drive mods and what could the cost saving be ?
