Why did they not get their boats out?

Well, I know down here in S Florida many people don't take the warnings seriously. I myself blew off too much preparation when they said Wilma would be coming across the state, sure I had a 24 pack of water and a couple bags of chips/pretzels etc figuring things might be bad but after several false calls previously I would be fine, everything would be pretty much normal the next day. Turns out we got our ass kicked, I had no power for 13 days, gas stations and grocery stores were closed down, it was the first time in my life I ever accepted a handout from our govt, but without the water and MRE's I don't know how I would have made it through. I take it MUCH more seriously now, and assemble a box full of emergency rations and water at the start of every hurricane season, along with tarps, tie downs, and whatever else I think I may need to get through after a storm. Human nature seems to be "it can't happen to me", but when reality bites you in the ass you start taking things more seriously for the next one. I guess its kinda like our boating experiences, who really has a "bailout" bag in case something happens to us offshore?

Maybe they were looking to collect on insurance. I'm sure there are some of them that are upside down on their boat. What better way to get rid of it. just speculating though.

After going many years without serious damage most people get complacent.
When Andrew came thru south Florida it had been so long since a big storm no one even remembered. Then Andrew showed what a Cat 5 can do.. After that any stiff wind and everyone was scrambling to get ready.

A lot of people couldn't. Many of them don't have a trailer to put the boat on and the marinas were so swamped with calls, they just couldn't get them all out. Besides, in a lot of areas, even the boats that were stored on the ground got washed away by the storm surge.

lets say you have a 40 foot long 13 feet wide cruiser in the marina and a big storm is coming in 5 days,what do you do with it,and keep in mind that it is 1 of 100 in your marina,so it is on the list to be put on drydock.if you have a trailer boat,no excuse not to move it,just saying.

When we got insurance for the SeaRay 500 last year we had to have a storm plan including removing all possible electronics.

Our plan calls for running the boat as far as possible up the San Jacinto river to an area that we consider safe harbour.

We also had to specify an alternate Captain if the the owner was out of town.

Not sure if this is typical insurance requirements.

As far as the before and after pics, I'd be claiming salvage on every one that landed on my property:evilb:
