Most of the cheeper brand race fuels are 87 or lower octane offroad fuel with toluene and a little hydraulic oil mixed together. The toluene evaporating is why they loose octane over time so fast.

From the little I know about this I figure it would take around 46 gallons of toluene and 8 gallons of 87 to make 54 gallons of 110 ocatane. This assumes that it is all linear for the octane rating when mixed together. Is lead also involved? Something else? Since the components you noted only add up to 54 gallons, do you know what the other gallon is?

If you are going to work with Toluene you should use a respirator with VOC filters. The stuff is nasty, and I would only use it in fuel systems set up for ethanol, etc. It can disolve a lot of things like paint and old varnish in fuel systems. The real question is do you NEED more octane? If your motr doesn't require more octane then the base fuel your buying then the booster does absolutely NOTHING for you but cost you money. My own boat has a procharged 540 in it, I run around 12 psi of boost on 93 octane making 1050 hp with that pulley. If I am worried about my octane being questionable on my boat or I want to run my 14 psi pulley I throw in 15 or 20 gallons of race gas to boost the ocatane, for the most part I don't buy octane booster for my boat as it will help as a last resort but I never have to buy gas on the water, Smitty

I am sure my old 911 will like it too. ;) (280) then x's that times the octane -280X 87=24360 then do the same with the second fuel-280X 100=28000, then add the 2 numbers together-24360+28000=52360 then divide that by 560=93.5 octane, not worth the trouble in my opinion. Start with some non-ethanol 90 octane if you can and your actually looking for a number in mid 90's. Keep in mind everyone says you need some extra cylinder lubrication when running avgas (I have never personally ran it) so you either add castor oil, transmision fluid or 2 stroke oil (from what I have read), Smitty I just rearead your post, yoou would have all the octane you need BUT if your getting fuel delivered to your tank anyways I am sure you could get 90 octane non ethanol instead for a tiny bit more and just mix a lower amt of avgas to save money unless your trying to use it up anyways, Smitty |
I am pretty sure that 100LL is 100 octane on the motor scale which means it would be around 105 per the (R+M)/2 scale which is what you see on the pump at the gas station for cars.

If you run the Avgas 100LL (105 octane) mix a bottle of Marvel Mystery oil in with it, 16oz to 150-200gal. Works great for me anyway.

A friend of mine used to run toluene in his twin 11:1 compression motors...I run a bit of racegas- wonder whats in mine? :)
Anyway I saw a program on 60 minutes or one of those shows....and learned that bums that sniff spray paint are called Huffers- they are after the toluene. Their brains were imaged and extremely distorted as well as their behavior :eek: Anyway I tried not to run behind my friends boat after that...anyway bad stuff to breathe.
