Merc 1700
Anyone have any info on Merc's neew 1700hp race engine?
|
The 1700 is a juiced up boosted 1350 that runs on race fuel, some race teams are already running them
|
only other information i can find. got this in my email inbox this afternoon
|
If they are really running at the 1700HP level without failures, they truly deserve the accolades.
Sweet Jesus! Thats really getting up there... |
Only the 1%er will be able to afford these motors---------- if the 1350's are $204000.00 each, would not want to even guess how much the 1700's will be .. Way too much money !!!!!!!!

Out of reach or healthy sponsors.

Problem is there's only one company that makes a drive to take that much power and its not mercury.....

I believe there would be several companys out there that will hold , most shafts will, bpm, trimax, arneson, Flexi, levi, scs, pulse, Xpower,tOp system to name a few, there are already some boats on the race circuit running them.
|
302sport- why would mercury put the $, R&D, and man hours into developing a drive for the extremely limited market that the 1700 would be in when there are already a few out there with experience in that market that are perfectly capable? Doesn't make sense. And why is that a problem?:point:
Cheers to Merc for expanding there motor offerings for racers |

Are there any real numbers on the M8 yet? Have there been (numerous) failures?
|
|
I agree- I think a more reliable drive should be mated to the 565, the XR has come up short (at least from the info here)... Although we do not know how the drives that were problematic were treated/maintained.
|
What boats are running these on the race circuit?
|
Gasse I would think..........
|
Bob Bull's MTI that ran 180 at the shoot out has these...that was the basis for the development. Gasse' I believe doesn't have larger turbos just turned up to 1650 , believe stockers max out at that. Don't quote me, but I believe that's the case. Fastboats.com probably as well..
And that thread really says no real information on the #8 Failing. The #6 is a serious drive if you keep the gears in check and do regular maintenance. They've put all kinds of power through it. I don't see any basis for needing a shaft drive. Just my humble opinion. and think about it, race, 1700, same sentence, 0 warranty, who cares what drive you run it with, you grenade one it's going to be a very expensive day but anyone buying these already knew that. This isn't exactly for a pleasure boater. I'm sure plenty will jump on the band wagon in the far and few between and buy em, throw em in a poker run boat...but let's be serious...the 1350 is pretty much 90% of the power you'd ever need unless you're trying to go after something. Be it bragging rights, a record or something along those lines...The hull's are so efficient now you don't need the huge power to push them fast.. Unless it's an Apache, then you might.... ;) |

This si a bit of a Hijack but ask Dustin about the 1700s they are putting in a 44 OL. They made 1700 on 93 and I have heard they will make 2k on race fuel. They were built by goodwin competition in Omro WI. They thing that sux is Merc wont sell the M8s unless you get the motors too. So this boat will get 6's. Also my understanding is these motors will be tuned down before they go in the boat. After all this is just a pleasure boat.
|
Pete, you know what I'm saying....I'm saying joe schmoe isn't going to go out and buy a set of 1700s...the guy who runs that boat isn't going to be running it 160mph...It's just over built. The valve train in that motor is extremely impressive, not to mention everything else on the motor including the fact it's running MERC Ecu's reprogrammed so it interfaces with the smart craft. Now that's cool. All Aluminum, hemi style heads...she can breathe :)

So was Bull's 48 MTI running the higher power at the shootout? Or was he then at 1350? Clarification Please.

Do you seriously think a pair of stock 1350's pushed his huge 48' cat to 180+mph in a 1 mile drag race while it took a pair of 1800's to push a much smaller 33' cat to 190+mph in the same distance? I can't believe anyone actually ever believed he had stock 1350's at the shootout when he ran that number :lolhit:
I did. But I'm not much of a liar bull****ter. I don't really get the whole secretive nature of these guys. I'll tell you what I have, how it's set up and what it will actually run any time you ask. What's the point? There is no trophy, record book, or prize money. "Hello, I'm blah blah. I've had my 1350s turned up. There are very few in the country. I hope it will run 180. We've had it to 170+. We are going to push it to the limit today." To me, that's a lot cooler than lying about it |

Its a lot nicer to say stock 1350s than to tell people its none of their business is my guess. Plus it would be good for sales. BAM, it was easy to figure out. Look at the other 48 MTIs with 1350s. While they haul a$$, the tests showed they needed a longer distance to get to top speed than a mile and were propped for top speed than for acceleration. I've watched the video of Gino's MB MTI hitting 190+mph a ton and you can tell it took well over a mile to get there. I'm not trying to insult anyones boat but it didn't make sense to me immediately when I heard his 1350s were stock compared to the other 48' 1350 MTIs.
Gary, your boat is definitely a rocket. I've really enjoyed watching your videos of the DS poker run and always "rooted" for ya. I hope you change your mind about selling it or build something even more wicked. |
Articles like these are what I mean and posted top speeds of boats like Terminator, Phantom, ZR48, and Windship. Flat out with no distance limit, the speeds I've seen posted for stock 1350s in a 48' MTI are between 170-185mph.
