I've only had one lower fail... and it was because someone forgot the washer under the prop. I've broke about 7 Bravo ones these past 25 years. 3 on my current boat just a few seasons ago... No shafts only gears always 4 blades and almost always in the 5-6k rpm range. But same boat that had 3 failures in one year... I installed brand new bravo ones and have hundreds of trouble free hours thus far and added even more power... Way easier to have a repair hold up with 300HP than it is with 500... or 700... From the factory they can be broke in a weekend with 600+ HP but uncommon sense goes a long ways....

So after reading this thread sounds like everything junk except a #6 drive? That can't be right. What kind of outdrive is best bang for buck for something in the 600hp range or less?

Im running way more than 600 a side with XR's and IMCO bottoms, zinged the props a few times at the Cig event on LOTO and held up so far.....:drink:.... TPB all depends on the budget, I dont think you need to go over kill with 600 hp, you could drop 15k + for a Imco SCX but dont think you need to.

My personal opinion that means nothing, a XZ drive. Since they do not make the whole drive I think I said it on here before. When a friends 525 powered XR drive started to pit the gears he bought XZ gears, had them cryno treated and put in. I think he had 100 hours on it and every time he changed gear lube the plug was clean.

The guy has the boat in Chi town area now, think he may be at LOTO for the shootout. Its a 2007 35 single step fountain with a 18.5" X,,,,,,,, running 5 blades with diffuser rings so it will get on plane.

As far as broken gears go,,I see many more broken XR Upper gearset's come into my repair shop than any other Bravo outdrive

Taking a survey as to what you have personally had happen to your XR drive if it broke.

I need to know what failed first, not the other parts it took out in the process.

I am working on an improved upper gear set and also think the lowers are an issue for some as well.

Thx

None, swapped mine out for Arneson's years ago.

seems like a lot of the boaters on heres problems would go away if they did the same thing you did but everyone is stuck on the bravo or their derivitive at a great cost in both money and speed
