Not the speakers distorting, but the crap amp in the head unit. Get a good amp and really see what those speakers could do.

I would not put any speakers in the rear bench unless they are subs. Putting 6x9 or 6.5's down there is a waste. Unless you are going to be laying on the floor to listen to them. Put mid/Hi speakers up as high as you can so you can hear them. Put subs close to the floor to get half space gain off the floor.

If you already have 6x9's in the bench, take them out replace them with some 10" subs. Move the 6x9's up higher, and you will make a vast improvement in sound.

You could run all four 6x9's with two channels of that amp. Then use the other 2 bridged to run a sub.

I just put 4 sets of MM651's in the MTI i just bought to screw around with. I heard them today for the first time and they really sound great. I think i need to change to larger amps as the cones were bearly moving.

Yes you could run one half of the amp in stereo for your 6x9's. Running them in parallel. Then bridge the other two channels to run a sub.

Would not be perfect power for the 6x9's, but still better than the headunit amp.

Would be alot better system than runing four 6x9's off the HU with two of them in the bench. Might as well get you some maximus speakers from the 80's and a Kraco HU for that setup.

Yes, they are for marine use. Check out Polk's website, or talk to their tech line. I say more power and quality amp=cleaner sound. You'll be amazed how your system will sound with a good amp and speakers. Without an amp, it's going to clip. Picture this, on the water enjoying the day, maybe having a few and you wanta hear your favorite tune. LOUD Not going to happen in an open cockpit boat, all you'll hear is distortion. You can get away without an amp in a car, not in a boat.
Lots of good stuff on the market.Unless you're one of the lucky people from the deep south, you have all winter to shop.

Just to give you and idea what size amp you can use, the MM,DXi, and db series Polk 6x9 speakers are rated @ 125 watts continuous, 300 watts peak.

I'm considering upgrading my stereo this winter as well. Stumbled on these speaker grills that look like will work with the Polk MM691's. A little plain looking, but they offer more protection and will blend better in a mostly white interior.

It is model number DXI69 MG and Best Buy carries them.
