Damn Gary, sorry about the motor...
However, if I know you, you'll probably have one back together before weeks' end...I'm sure someone will have a nice used Maytag at the curb this week, you can grab for parts.
(sorry, had to thro a little stab at ya)
Was a nice day over here too...had the Allison out for the first time since Halloween...

I Put the big rods in these motors so I doubt I actually broke one. Probably jammed a piece of piston skirt through the case. Fastest we went yesterday was 48 and were at idle when it popped. Never had that happen before. If I'm lucky the sleeve will be salvagable and I'll get the window welded.
I ported these blocks so hate to replace unless I have to.
One of the positive of the O/B's (as you know) is I can have the bad p.head off, disassembled and on my bench in an hour.
Scary thing is, I was just starting to feel confident enough to head for Grand Bahama Island

As you say though, self inflicted. BTW, you should do the same cooling mod to the motors I sold you if you ever run them.
I'll check today but think my motors have about 10 PSI more compression than yours which I just proved, is enough. Or more when not set up perfectly for it.
Also, in thinking, we spent all day yesterday in the mid range which is the notorious lean area for these motors so I also need to fatten up the mid range jets as well. Went up when I built them but evidently not enough and clearly did not spend enough time tuning after the builds.
Jeff, cool pix's! Still something about an A Bote
On the Maytag by the curb comment, thats why I run them and not what you guys do. Something to be said for being able to buy a complete running motor for $1K
We still managed to make the best of the day. Limped into an island on one motor and spent a few hrs baking in the sun while enjoying some music, a fine seagar and a good book

Mark, had the pup before, just first time on the boat in a long while and first time in her life vest. She has taken to riding on the sun lounge same as yours which keeps Mama quite nervous.
Tom, you're on. Keep me posted. It's a really neat area for boating. We have a show down here called "How to do Florida" and they just did an episode about boat camping on the islands right where we were.

So, the autopsy is complete and it looks like I was right about everything. It is amazing that the other 5 plugs and piston tops are perfect and my jetting/tuning looks really good.
So it's just the one top hole on that side going into detonation.
It hammered that piston bad enough that it wiped out a locater pin, broke the top ring and the bottom of the piston skirt.
All that debris then went through the rod slot and got pounded by the rod.
Sleeve would have been OK had it not been for the locater pin digging a groove through it too deep to bore.
One piston and one sleeve. So about a $200. rebuild.
Here's a close up of the wiped out ring lands.

To the right is what the left piston used to look like.
