Marvel Mystery Oil
Has anyone Used it as an oil additive in thier boat? Works great on motorcycles.
|
Sorry but I have somewhat of a dilema about putting something in my boat that is called "mystery oil" but I have talked to a lot of people that swear by it in their trucks.
|
I use it all the time and it seems to work great. I have never had any problems, was turned on to it by someone who used it in their boat, swore by it and started me on it.
-PL |
I use it on my snowmobile, outboard engine and winterize my boat with it.
Mix it with straight 30 wt. I swear by it! |
What kind of benefits have you seen from it? Any actual anecdotal evidence that it works as claimed?
|
My snowmobiles have never had engine problems due to not fogging them in the fall. Just mix the oil with 30 wt., take out the plugs, pour in a cap full, pull the rope a few times and put the plugs back in. In fall start it up, let it run, then put in new plugs. Snowmobiles are notorious for burning up crank bearings if not winterized properly.
I do the same thing to my outboard engine. The sucker starts on the second pull each spring. Its a 7.5 Evinrude 1980ish. I pour the mix down the carb on the Sea-Ray each fall while the engine is running. So, I do not see any benifits except I feel my toys are being properly maintained, and the MMO is part of it. I've been using it for eons! If it ain't broke, don't fix it! |
I use in all of my vehicles oil. Never tried the boat engine, but will when i get another one.
You can you burn it in your Outboards(2cycle)? Havent heard of that but I dont know. Also it says you can put it in your fuel, anyone ever tried that? |
I use it in my fuel, works great.
-PANTERA LOVER |
I've used it to free three different siezed engines, two on boats, and one on a jet ski. I fill the cylinders with it and let it soak. I've used it many other ways too, and I love the smell of it. :)
|
Okay, so lots of folks use it in differnt ways. But...Just what does it do that makes you so happy with it?
|
I use it to fog the engine in the fall because it is cheap compared to the so called "fogging oils". A cup is all that is needed for a BBC.
|
I have heard people use it to break in a motor. Don't know about a marine motor. Also as a "flush" to clean internals. Drain motor, fill with Mystery oil, run motor, drain, and refill with regular oil.
|
I've used Marvel to "fog" motors down for years !!! It's not just something you should do before the fall. Boats unless you a lucky enough to use them every day have much more corrosion inside the engines from the mosture in the air. A small amount of Marvel down the carb before you shut off, and put it away will give you a lot better longevity !!!
|
When I had my 82 FLH ( shovel Head ) I would mix a little in my gas tank.
See no Evo, hear no Evo, ride no Evo.  |
We use it on motors that are not going to be run for awhile. It keeps the valves, and cylinders lubricated. Also prevents rust spots.
|
OK..I got a 66 stang with a 289 it sits 99.9% of its life so I can mix it with the oil to keep it fresh??? would that be right??
|
I've started mixing it in with the av-gas I run.
|
When we fog a motor, we start the engine, bring the rpm's up a little, then slowly pour the Marvel Mystery oil in the carb untill you can see smoke comming out the exhaust. Then imediatley shut the engine off.
|
I have used Marvel Mystery Oil for years. It's great in air tools to keep the condensation from creating rust for one thing. Chigaco Pneumatics calls out MMO by name as the recommended lube for their air tools.
Put it in the gas at around 4oz per 10 gal. for top cylinder lube. Might be just the thing for blower motors that are hard on valve train. Also, a little lube in the blower itself couldn't hurt longevity. In a previous life I was an A&P Mechanic. The Old Timers in aviation swear by it. DC-3 and other radial engined pilots kept a few gallons on board and whenever they heard mis-firing, dumped a gallon into thier radial engines. Presto, fixed. It mainly worked on keeping valve train components free and sludge build up down. Here's a url from that side of the house: http://www.stearman.net/forum/messag...3&threadid=289 And an extract: Hi Guys This is an interesting debate and I am keen on any method which will prolong the life of my W670. The oil is expensive here in Australia, but a helluva lot cheaper than an engine repair!!I hear conflicting views. I run my engine on 100LL and the question of adding MM oil was asked of Radialengines..See their website at www.radialengines.com. Here is an extract. Q. Does using Marvel Mystery Oil in the Fuel accomplish anything? A. In our experience, yes, it does. At the temperatures found in the combustion chamber of a cylinder, MM oil will be vaporized. The best theory is that the MM oil acts as a vapor blast and keeps carbon and lead deposits soft and passing through the exhaust valve rather than adhering to the valve, seat, or guide. In these days of 100 LL fuel (with several times the lead content of the original 80/87 octane fuel) this is an important function. Overall, engines operated with MM oil experience significantly less valve and seat problems and have cleaner burning spark plugs. Hope this helps, Scott |
Hey I still am an A&P mechanic. Marvel Mystery oil was started by the manufacturer (sp) of Marvel Shebler carburetors, still used today in almost every carbed aircraft. when He built them they would come shipped new with a perservitive oil inside them. No one knew what the stuff was hence the name. basically it is an airomatic hydrocarbon that will 1) burn 2) be great as a penetrating oil, this is why it frees up stuck engines. and 3) get rid of deposites caused by burnt oil or lead depositis. some of you guys know that when you put wd-40 or pblaster or liqiud wrench on a stuck bolt, it will also loosen up the grease around it. it also smells "funny" well, this stuff does just that inside the engine. It also works good for fogging because it leaves an oily film on everything. I personaly think that the stuff is made from this, and any aircraft mechanic might agree. 5606 mineral hydraulic fluid,( hence the red color), mouse milk, an old penetrating oil( smell the stuff) a hint of 100 wt mineral oil and a little 100 low lead. I have mixed this stuff together and have come up with the same viscosity, color, and smell. I overhaul aircraft carbs at my shop and this is the stuff I ship 'em with. hell, pour it in any engine, wont hurt it, and it may even increase the octane rating a bit. It burns slower then regular gas, so theoreticaly it does just that.
have fun be safe!!!!!!!!!!!! Billy P.S. I run it in my blown hemi. |

KEROSENE
The key ingredient in MMO and liquid wrench is Kerosene.. MMO is great for winterizing engines ..dump some down the carb until it smokes like hell then shut down , coats all the internals.Dump it in slow or youll hydro lock and snap a rod or sumthin..
Mix it with engine oil to clean sludge and carbon deposits..but dont leave it in there , its thin. Great for lubing air tools and cleaning parts .. I love the stuff:D |
"Sludge"??
You are still using rotten dinosaurs in your motors? MMO has its place in freeing up a stuck motor, top lube etc... But if you use a good oil (a synthetic one) you NEVER get sludge or any deposits in the lubrication system. Got a 68 'stang that sits?? Amsoil marine oil is the best thing you could ever do for that motor in the crankcase. |
Some people fall for anything
Ill bet you were the first guy to put slick 50 in his engine to fill in all the microgrooves..

You wont hear about after using synthetic, my motor rebuilt itself. But the lack of deposits and improved lubricity is an absolute fact. Motors last longer and are better protected with synthetic.
The racers run it for a reason. The breakdown temperature on the stuff is through the roof. Filmstrength is untouchable compared to dino-sludge. Sticking with "good petroleum oil" these days is nothing more than pure ignorance. How about a ****ty little escort motor with 100,000 miles on it and THREE oil changes?? Yes THREE! (Actually four if you count the first one when I drained the factory sludge out of it.) 35,000 mile oil changes?? My GOD! That guy must be CRAZY!! Right?? That motor must be LOADED with deposits.....hell, it would be amazing if it would even run at all! I run Amsoil. I don't sell it and I don't give a **** if 3/4's of the population wallows in the bias-ply/points/carb mentality forever. I had the pleasure of pulling my wifes car apart thanks to a bad casting from Ford and a valve seat that decided to rear its ugly little head at just under 100,000 miles. I owned this thing since new. You tell me if you see any deposits. (No flushing was ever done on this motor.) Here it is.... |

Think these rod bearings in the little 1.9 four banger look average? Perhaps a little better than average? Three oil changes................
|

Now for a look at the bottom end......
You can see the oil sticking to the metal all over it....so it is pretty obvious that I did not clean it before these pics were taken..... This is the piston that got trashed when it ate the valve seat... Three oil changes......... |

Heat usually makes for the nastiest deposits in the head right?
See the oil sticking to it? Think I cleaned it before taking this picture? Pardon the hints of sarcasm, but when you compare the huge gift that synthetic oil is to motors in general to some snake oil **** like Slick50........ I have to react. Hopefully someone will see this and realize that I am not selling anything, just trying to help out fellow boaters. If you bought a Vette, would you put mini-spares on it for tires? Of course not. So if you just dropped huge money on a boat.....why would you put the cheapest **** dino sludge in the engine(s)?? I like to have the best in everything I own. Even my wifes daily driver. |
r u try'n to say this engine looks good???LOL...that thing looks like crap!
there are a ton of myths about syn vs st. engine oil...yes syn. is the way to go....but this should not affect your oil change interval if you want THE best performance! we spent an ASS LOAD of $$ to do engine oil study. I TEND TO USE THAT FOR MY INFO :D |
WOW
Those posts were long ! But I managed to get through them.. Let me get this straight , " You bought an escort "?? Then bothered to rebuild the engine .. That pretty much says it all...:D :D :D
|
one more thing....i have friend that have LEASE trucks...we run the PISS out of them...change the oil 2 times once at 50k and then when it gets returnd!...this is the great part....we add oil when the light comes on...most of the time 4qt min to fill it!...o-yeah we use it for ice climbing so we start it at -10 w/ZERO warm up and run the snot out of it....yeah,,,the engine is hurt'n when we give it back...but it runs and has clean oil in!!!LOL...but we don't own it!!! i change my boat oil every 10 hours maX...my SVT is about 2k...unless i do a 300 mile trip and run a lot over 120+...then i change it.
|
Awww, come on now Joey, FOMOCO doesn't spend any money on R&D do they???????LOL
|
here at global testing wonder myself most days!!!LOL
|
I did not "rebuild" the motor. I popped another piston in it, had the head done and it is approaching 140,000 now and still running strong.
(On its fourth oil change) The inside of this motor looks like crap considering the mileage and 35,000 mile changes?? Are you stoned or something? The guy at the motor shop thought I had already cleaned the head when I dropped it off. He said it had to be low miles cause it was "remarkably clean inside." He wanted to know how many miles it had. When he measured the cam, it came out to new specs. No wear he could detect. Same thing with the bearings. Plasti-guage showed results my local machinist buddy thought were bull****. So he came over with his box of measuring devices and had at the crankshaft and caps. He could not believe what he measured. Everything still in new spec. (Unless Ford lies about what new spec is.) Guess what oil flows through every vehicle he owns now?? |
It takes about 13 quartz to fill my motor with oil, so how much MMO should I put in there as an additive?
|
Gumby, come on damnit. Have an opinion. Don't be so wishy-washy suger coating it. ;)
Ditto on the plastic oil for me though. Ran Mobil 1 for a long time then the last couple of years, I switched to Royal Purple. Buddies wonder why I spend the money. Hell, I run harder than they do and even if you've got a 55 gal oil pan, oil changes are cheaper than rebuilds! Still, MMO has it's place. Scott |
Gummy Damnit
Gummy I think you need to lighten up a bit! You were the one who came out rippin with the dino sludge comments ..Congrats on your shiny escort inards .Perhaps if you didn't waste your money putting syn. in an escort you could move up to a Tempo or maybe even a taurus wagon.. I run 5 outboards and have no need for synthetic oil..The truck gets traded every 100K so I could care less what the inside of the motor looks like..

Marvel Mystery Oil, What is in it?
An old friend of mine, who is one of the best tool and die makers I know, said that oil of wintergreen is one of the best penetrating oils there is and it is (was) available at some phramacies. Anyway, I swear I smell a bit of wintergreen in the MMO. Anyone else smell it? Also, older differential oils had an additive called rape seed oil. No joke and I am not referring to Vaseline. I thought it was a GM part # and came in a small bottle. Maybe used for positraction rear ends in the late 1960's. Old car buffs should know this one. |
First off anyone who says that synthetic is always better no matter what has never done the testing, or looked at it. There are many cases in which synthetic oils can work too good. As far as for pure HP, yea no problem we've run "0" Redline, Royal Purple, and a few others works great, for a few passes down the dragstrip.
There's a place for everything !!! |
