Jason,
Check your wiring for a ground wire not attached. I just put my motors back in and each motor had 3 ground wires attached. One at the right motor mount, one at the right rear of the block, and one at the left rear of the block going to the transom. I almost missed the one at the right rear because the wire fell down behind the prop exhaust manifold. Good luck !! Bo |
Well my friends I have good news and bad news
Good news: both engines fired up last night Starboard engine after we got both starters in ran like a champ revved her up to 2K and had her there for about 5-10 minutes with 50 PSI oil pressure Not bad, alot of smoke from hand prints and assembly lube smell but not too bad poor breather in the valve cover was smokin like a nun on a bike in a windstorm (whatever that means) Engine #2 Mr Port side That one is not very happy That is the one that ran before took some coaxing but finally started and she snaps wicked out the carb and we revved it and still snap snap snap So this means an exhaust valve is NOT opening causes that I can think of 1 rocker arm came off or very poorly adjusted 2 bent push rod (possible but highly unlikely) 3 broken valve spring 4 broken rocker arm stud 5 and my personal favorite WIPED CAM Gee lets think this bastard cloud has been over me since last year what would the hardest thing for me to do to fix the boat be out of this list Hummmmm thinking............. thinking............ thinking............. Yeah I agree CAM Anyone want to put some odds down as to what it is? I think im going to run it at home later today, pull off one wire at a time, when that snap stops and the wooosh is what you hear, then I can find what cylinder but Ill bet 100:1 that it is a cam Anyone want to guess? Jason |
Pull your filter and open it up and see if you have any metal in there. If you do then you DO NOT want to run the engine any more. There could be metal all in the pan and that will wipe out your bearings. Can you get the engine builder over there again to take a look now that they are turning over ok?
Jon |
I have to call the engine builder but that is what the tech said, Get Joe (engine builder) over there to the house to listen to it.
So we shall see Lets hope this goes under the "warranty" Jason Oh and yeah, If I have to yank this bastard again, Im going to have him run it on the floor and break in the cam Screw this stuff Paid alot of loot to get these things done. |
Sorry bout your problems but just wanted to make you aware of some interesting info. Not sure what type cam youve installed if it hydraulic such as mine the Mercury motor kit that my machinist recieved had defective lifters (found this after install and initial run.) you might want to look at them carefully seeing how this is all the same time frame. Mercury...Melling lifters have sent a rep out to inspect my motor and didnt even bat a eye and agreed to pay for complete repair labor included. He acted if this is a reacurring problem ongoing. My story is in "compression problem" thred. But with such a high compression motor Im sure you probably have a roller and this wouldnt pertain anyway. Good Luck!

Well yeah
9.5:1 compression Crane Cam Hydraulic NON roller cam with regular hydraulic lifters one of those just regular old hooptie cams nothing special Mercury would have nothing to do with this I think to replace the cam, it is going to cost about 80-100 bucks for the cam im sure the lifters are okay but we shall see Going to call engine people very soon Ill post an update for everyone but honestly my guess cam Jason |
Check me if I m wrong but all hydraulic lifters are made by Johnson which has now moved it operation to Mexico and sold out regardless of what company puts there name on the box. (at least this is what the Melling rep told us. I d look it might be worth your while
Rocket |
Well you must feel good that you made progress and one motor runs ok :D:D
|
Jon, yeah im happy that it runs but pissed that it is messed up
Engine builder is coming over at 1 to listen to them fire up. we shall see I have to confirm all these details and get this ball rolling I really was looking forward to getting down to Dave and Busters tomorrow morning and meeting all the OSO'ers and NJPPC people and it was going to hurt that I could not follow in the P run but hey, break in time is break in time. plus that thing called trust Last thing I need is to get stuck out there. Ill let ya know what happens Jason |
THis spring I found one of my new edelbrock lifters (hyd flat tappet) was siezed and wouldnt move. Im very glad I found it before I fired the engine. Edelbrock sent me a new one right away and were very concerned about the problem.
