ALWAYS replace both lifters and cam together....good luck bro....you should have the engine builder right there so the blame is not on YOU!

Well I spoke to the tech
we are meeting at my house at 2 PM today
I suggested pulling one wire off at a time so when the POP POP sound turns to a WOOSHHH then I can identify WHICH Cylinder it actually is
Engine builder is thinking one of the valves is too tight and when lifter pumped up, it got the valve stuck open and wont let valve come fully closed
that is a good explanation to the problem at hand but hey im a worry wart
I still think the cam is wiped out
but Ill be so damn happy if it is a stuck valve and it is okay with a few adjustments
cant quite get the valve covers off with the exhaust there so we are going to loosen up the bolts on the manifold a little bit and hopefully be able to get enough room to get a socket on the nuts on the v covers.
One question though
if the cam is wiped out right? Would ALL of the lobes be wearing down or is it usual to just wear down ONE lobe?
I would think alot of the lobes would be suffering the same fate but at different rates than the first one.
Talk to me guys
Thanks
Jason

Hey JOE!!!!
Yeah your exactly right
the tech heard the pop and said get Joe the engine builder over there
so that is the plan
let him hear it and see what he thinks
Engines are under warranty and this dude cares about his reputation so hey
Ill let him figure it out and see what has to be done but if it is a cam, Im not going in water tomorrow DAMN IT!!!
but hopefully we can get a rush job on this and yank it and zip it to his shop and have him cam swap it and get that all done and over with, fired up , broken in and timing set, then dump it in, hook everything up and away we go on test drive (yeah if it was only that simple)
Keep your fingers crossed for stuck valve!!!

Jay, I definately think you will find that 1 or maybe even 2 cylinders are not firing due to a tight valve. Easy to check right now; get a compression gauge and turn the motor over (don't forget to disconnect the coil) and check compression on each cylinder. I think you will find your problem. I have thought this about this motor since I first read that it was backfiring through the carb.

Well Im really praying for a stuck valve (how normal is a stuck valve?)
When I had it running before it was not doing this but then it started almost immediately so I shut it off
now it is back as soon as you fire it up
would wiping a cam lobe happen gradually or just start pop pop pop out of no where?
I think wiping a lobe would be gradual and take some time
engine only ran for about 10 minutes the first time and developed the pop
(russ you saw the home video, it did not run that long)
When I started hearing the pop I shut it off right away
(when in doubt shut it off)
but it did suck some water in so that is what I thought happened the first time around.
Hard to diagnose this by reading about it im sure.
I hope it is something stupid and small, little tweak here, turn there, ouch you son of a _ _ _ _ _
kablam
A-OKAY to go
but this black cloud keeps haunting me

I also think that Joes origional statement of a leak down test is now in order
that will no question tell me (compression test will tell me too but with a leak down you dont have to crank the engine just bump it to where the valves are closed) and see if I hear air escaping through intake and listen to exhaust pipe to see if air is escaping,
I also want to rotate engine by hand to see if that exhaust valve even opens or not.
So no matter what it is, Ill be able to tell immediately this afternoon and then come up with a plan of attack
but if it is the cam, I think it should be on engine builders dime not mine.
What do you all think?
