I personally think the LS engines will eventually take over the bang for the buck is there for sure. The parts are coming down in price and the cylinder head choices are huge. Believe me when I tell you the reliability is there even in high hp application.

GM has had crate engines...but the lsx is thestrongest one they have ever made.... http://www.chevroletperformance.com/pdf/LSX454R.pdf

I am convinced that at 550hp... the engine to build is an alum ls3 block and heads, forged internal 416ci with vvt, incolnel and stainless valves, 6000max rpm.
What are your opinions on this 750HP @ 6000 DURABILITY comparison... 502 GM forged BBC (short block crate) dart pro 1 marine heads with incolnel and stainless, whipple 3.3 efi VS. 416ci Alum forged ls3 block and heads, incolnel and stainless, with a whipple 3.3. Ls is lighter and should have better fuel economy if you can keep it out of boost as cruising (like the 502). Which one is more reliable and durable....are they close? |
If you ran a procharger, you could install a waste gate into your charge pipe and use either an aftermarket efi or boost controller setup with a solenoid to bleed off boost into the atmosphere. Program it to stay out of boost until you are over a certain rpm to keep cruising economy decent, or even a simple on off toggle with an external air supply and solenoid. This is pretty common to do in drag cars with centrifical blowers for traction on a launch.

There is probably a way to make it work with a screw type blower as well, I'm just not all that familiar with them.
|
Snailblazer- sounds like somebody's cruises through Ls1Tech and tbssowners alot. Haha so am I as it seems you have one judging by your name here. But what would also work in this case to keep IAT's down would be the ability of a nice water to air intercoller for a pro charger as a lot of people run the super/killer chillers under there twin screws. I'm sure they already have them out there as there's not much that hasn't been though of or tested. I may consider this ls2 swap in something that would benefit for the fun factor. My jet boat would make a nice candidate!
|
I used to own a TBSS, sold it and bought a boat! I was the first guy into the 11s cam only. I really miss racing a lot but the boat is more fun by far. More enjoyable for others as well, and I can still get my speed fix.
Putting a blower on and NOT having it intercooled would be crazy. You've got a plentiful supply of cool water available. |

Cam will be on the smaller side for sure. We are still talking with the customer about Carb vs EFI so the cam is not set in stone yet.
Intake will probably be a Victor Jr either way. Victor Jr's are a good piece and with a proper cam and port work they really shine with some cubes under them. If you are looking at conventional style EFI intakes for the LS motors, the factory intakes work very well. The older Fast setups were a little over rated IMO. They did make more power but the quality was not where I would want it. Also they were not cheap depending on how you went about the setup and what intake you were taking off. The 102 is very nice piece. Cost is still up there however. It make great power, but they can also be a little difficult to tune with depending on Throttle body choice and things like that. Little long winded there but wanted to answer your question completely. I haven't seen a solid "small cam" build yet, so I'm looking up for someone that has already done it. I keep hearing about reversion, but no real world shared experience besides JIMKID Motorsports's LS7 build I'm also on LS1tech, and performancetrucks.net quite a bit. |

I understand the customer wanting a certain look; I like the look of the Holley Hi Ram. Have you had a chance to work with it yet?

The fast intake is good for about 20 hp,we found I have the mast open plenum intakes on my boat but I think they give up,to much torque for a boat better for drag race we are going to do some intake testing next moth thr harrob intake works nice but pricy

The mast two piece ls intake is the best cast single intake on the market. I had one of the first ones Cary ever made for a set of L92. The fit and finish have always been great. I'm actually building a max effort 434ci ls for a customer right now with a set of Mast PXR inline heads should be a serious piece when all done.
And Yes KPE is Keeter Performance Engineering. Tommy Keeter is the shop owner and my boss. |

Thanks for the details. I'm pretty heavy into swapping out cams/heads in the 99 and up GM trucks and cars.

This will be my first build using cam of the size we are looking at with l92's. Most of the time we are looking for a solid curve we stick with cathedral port combinations. Cam wise that is a pretty different combination. When the two strokers we have planned come together I will be happy to give you some more hard data on them. Sorry I do not have more good information just yet on what you are looking for. |
