If you are really using a grinding wheel, you'll need a special one for aluminum. The regular steel wheels will quickly load up. Of course you're not doing much so it might not matter...

I would double check before I started drilling. I would guess the fitting on the drive will work like a one way valve letting water in when the drive cools off.
You may be better off taking out the valve and plugging the hole.

RickR, I'm grinding on the INNER plate, not the outer. So, no water issues or leaks of any kind. I understand the one way valve on the drive/bell housing. No sweat!! But thanks for the concern.

Like formula 31 said just spray WD-40 on what you are grinding (about every 10 seconds of grinding) and it won't load up as fast with aluminum. Hell MIKE if you had told me you just needed a hole I have bits all the way up to 6 inches. And the drill to turn it.
3/4 inch hole in 1/2 inch aluminum takes about 1 minute.
