btw big yellow cat has a 40" skater v hull with a pair of 5.9 qsm cummins in it and arnesons. it will run in the 80s, i don't know if he has done any performance mods to them to get that speed.

diesel or outboards are the only thing to run here in colombia. gas is 5 bucks a gallon diesel is 4, and that's not on the water but at a gas station. add a buck or so if you have to buy it on the water....

there are several nice apache 41s for 70s and 80s on oso. i might be able to find one a lot cheaper, if it is just the hull less power and drives on a trailer, or i can buy one and strip it in the states and sell the eng and drives prior to shipping it down. i would rigging it here in colombia... thx, rm

Pete pakovich also has the 42 commanche bare hull sitting in florida that can be bought-- plain white -- the old 'team prime' boat. if it were me for down there i would keep it very basic and industrial type -- easier washdown/cleaning -- i don't imagine it will be rack stored...

Always thought that the Mercedes-Benz based MegaTechs are the most popular marine diesel engines in South America.

I had never heard of those but looking at the specs on their website, they seem way to heavy and slow revving to be any good in a performance boat, maybe i'm missing something.

Eliminator built a 43' Eagle with twin Cummins in 2008 for a prince in Dubai. Check out there site for vids. Seems like the Duramax would be a good fit for marine use as it's lighter than a Cummins and has more RPM potential. Surprised you don't see them in boats more often.

ive been land locked in medllin so i have no clue what they are running here, i do know cummins are easy to get parts for here or online in the states, and i can do my own repairs for the most part when needed. i was hoping to buy low mileage pair from dodge trucks, and convert then to marine use.

i will be moving to the coast in about two months when we start construction of the resort. looking for a small cc boat right now for hauling materials and building supplies and guest to and from tolu which is only about a 30 min ride to the island. as soon as we open i want a big diesel offshore boat to run guests to and from cartagena...rm

Taking the V hull/diesel project in a different direction - have you looked at the ad for the 46 skater w/ diesels & arnesons. It's sitting there turn-key for about the same possible ballpark $$$ as building a project boat and ridding any gremlins that pop up.

If a 46 Skater can't handle the rough the same as a 41 Apache.. something is waaaaay off. If it is that rough, any "guest" will not be happy anyway to be out there with you .... plus the skater should get you more top end (obviously).

Just throwing it out there as a possible option

Bravo!!!! This is one of best answers I've ever seen, that is a more stabe boat to shuttle people around with, top end is better, will out run a 41 Apache in most any water - the engines won't last very long compared to FWC Cummins but you'll get good life out of it. When they are shot you get the Cummins loose some speed but last forever.
