If you watch both videos of the wreck you will see why he cut across. In one video you can see a cruiser crossing the channel in front of PP and Jeff. This boat is going left to right for them and I belief Jeff knew he was on a direct collision course with them. In the other video you can see a different Cruiser parked off to Jeff's right waiting for the run. I believe this didn't allow them to move right to avoid hitting the boat crossing the channel so their only choice to avoid both boats was to try and slow and cross behind PP.
This is only my opinion after talking with many and watching the videos hundreds of times. It is really crazy how the parked cruiser and the cruiser crossing the channel never show up in the same video but are obvious in each video. I to have looked at all the vids I have been able to and I have come to the same conclusion as you have. I spent 25 years in law enforcement and have worked or been at numerious traffic accidents in which we had to figure out what happened. What I am waiting for before "passing judgement" of any kind is shots or video from above. That will clear things up, for me anyway, as to the actual positions of all the suspected craft in the area as well as clearing up which of the two cats changed their course. I known what it looks like from lake level but from above will be way more difinative. Mark PS: Before anyone chooses to jump on me, yes I was there at the event closer to the starting line at the time but moved on farther only to come up on this terrible event a few minutes after it happened. |

This whole thread makes me sick to even read. Show some respect for me and my babies and quit placing blame on Jeff who was driving or my husband who was on the throttles. I can assure you no one knew a boat or could throttle better than Brad.
May he rest in peace. |
"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference"
This says it all. People make mistakes, do stupid things and break rules. Accidents happen (I know this better than most). These things cannot be changed. However, finding a way to mitigate the risk of a catastrophe is within reach. Here's what I know: if there had been a device that would have brought these boats back to earth in a controlled manner, all five of the most recent blow-over fatalities would be here today. Its the same thing as seat belts and airbags. Is it expensive? Yep. Is it worth it? I think it is and I'm sure that the families of those lost would agree. As the originator of this thread, I respectfully ask that those who insist on badmouthing, blaming and pointing fingers, just f**k off and go start your own thread. This thread is about the smarter ones on OSO trying to develop a solution to something that without doubt, can be solved. You can implement all of the rules that you want to and provide an army to enforce them, but there are those who will act outside the parameters of those rules either purposely or by mistake. Its the human factor. My focus is to solve an obviously serious problem using technology and mechanical engineering. |

What could be seen as an accident would end up being criminal charges for the go fast operator (reckless endangerment etc). How would those flyby videos look to a jury?
Odd part is Lake Lanier just had a run of this size........nobody got hurt/killed , no videos posted of close flybys. FPC has had 20+ years of poker runs, some years had dozens of poker runs each year and not one fatality of a participant. Seems like some runs are being kept in check while others are mayhem. |
GETTINBYE is 100% correct the photos from above will determine the answer as to why what happened, but I really wish this discussion would lay for a while since the news is still "fresh" on the minds of the families involved (which are reading this) and need time to heal and find closure. God Bless the families and my prayers go out to you.

I think an adjustable wing between sponsons is worth a try. Use a wing fixed to both sponsons and control it with a rod connected to a stick (use the same type of stick as the throttle)
The problem is that a non pilot is not going to understand the flare and that small inputs are critical. So have an experienced pilot that knows boating go out and experiement. Meaning start off slow and continue to higher speeds until the control becomes natural. I think in a short time you'd have the ability of flying the boat/control. Meaning you could take it to the edge and bring it back consistently. The skill would then be refined in different enviroments. I'll tell you before long a blow over would instantly create a reaction to control the flight. When I fly an airplane, I do not think about flying. It's all reaction and natural instinct. Cost would not be that great. Get with an aviation engineer and they'll tell you exactly the shape and size of the wing to control the boat at certain speeds. It's not there competition so I'd expect some would do it for free. |
