ICDEDPPL I'm not sure if they are that much more reliable . There is an Outerlimits in Ontario with a pair of 1650s that he blu up in the first 50 hours . Also Tommy at Chief builds a turbo charged big HP motor that I think can go a long time between services. I think the warranty is the only really big advantage to the Mercury deal. Just my 2 .
RG. the blue 52 that ran 150 at loto?? |
Oh man!!
...No warranty.... Yikes. The 1100's are the most reliable of the 3, and it is touch and go at best.. 1350's blow all the time... I know guys that have gone thru multiple sets of them.. |
I have heard alot of this form some reputable sources, but besides your self you don't hear actual owners come on here say ought right the problems they have. I wonder why manufacturers would continue to push them, It seems to be a big disservice to your customer. It seems every new OL(among others) has them, and they have family ties to Whipple? God would I pissed if I had a pair blow up in 50 hours, its not like they are selling them cheap.

If The Merc offerings are no more reliable than the likes of Chief or Sterling - has Tommy or Mike had the opportunity to tear into one of the big Mercs to see where improvements could be had??
I realize that it is painfully obvious that BIG HP and longevity do not coincide very well but from the P.O.V. that 10-15 years ago 1100hp was thought to be the realistic limits of a relaible engine in a perfoemance marine enviroment..... evolution came from competition, inspection and experimentation to where all the big dogs have over 1600hp in there engine line-ups |

If a boat owner was having problems why would they broadcast that? They would kill the resale value of their own boat.

Blow up is a vague term... what specifically are the weakest parts on the Mercs? Why do they blow?
