World's Largest Cigarette

I have a 50' Baia which was built in molds made by Don Aronow and sold to this Italian builder. 24 degree, 14' beam, 55' overall with Aneson surface drives. The bottom looks identical to an unstepped Cigarette. It cruises at 48 MPH and tops out at 60. Dry weight 43,000 lbs with all the cruising comforts you could want. Great boat. Does anybody know anything more of the history of this design?

Aronow sold a set of molds for the 48' 3" Cigarette/Cary in the early 70's. It was a perfect 1.5 expansion of the 32' Cigarette/Cary, in length, beam and height. They were sold to Italy, to Intermarine, owned by Ronnie Bonelli. He also licensed the name "Cigarette" for Italy. In any case, Ronnie built one with turbines and surface drives (pre-Arneson) that was quite fast. I did not know that Baia was ever involved.....

Heavy Duty!!!!

43,000 lbs??? Isn't that a bit heavy for this size boat and still be able to go 60mph!!!

Jeez. I thought you guys were talking about a huge Bob Marley joint or something.:p

Hello Roger,
I was thinking about calling you yesterday and then I see your post. My ESP is working. How's the "Big cruise" going? Still thinking about a our 43 or is it too late to go back? Give me a call sometime.
Terry

The hull is solid kevlar and it is heavy. The weight was taken from the truck scales when the boat was transported, tanks empty. It has two 12 cylinder, twin turbo, intercooled MTUs @ 1,000 HP each. Speeds are GPS. Yes Terry, the big cruise went/is going great so far. 2,000 miles in Flolrida, and 500 here in CA with the San Juans next and many more to come. I still follow NorTec and marvel at the incredible ride you get out of the 43. There may be one in my future yet if I can sell my 382. Thanks again.

crazy horse = :)

roger hall = pls do not misunderstand but calculators say that you can go max 45mph.
do you have any pics?

blackhawk 08-08-2002 12:59 PM

Timucin, how did you figure that? If it was with one of those calulators where you put your weight, horsepower and "constant" (based on prop slip) in those things are way off. The only way to come close is gear ratio, pitch, slip and rpm. Too many variables with the other one. According to the calc at BAM marine at 4500 pounds, 415 hp and a constant of 200(max) it says I go go 61 mph. My boat runs 75 on GPS all day.

blackhawk:

I use bam marine formulas they usually work.

this is the first time I hear these formulas do not work..

but I still cannot imagine 43000lbs boat going 60 with 1000hp's
