Merc wants $1200 for a set of Value spring they lost their minds. They get $7500 for headers and you can buy the Gen X from CMI for almost half.

I wouldn't buy them either at that price. I also wouldn't buy a new engine part for my car from a dealer, Mercury isn't any different in comparison to auto OEM.

For that matter, we are getting well over 300 from 1100 hp. As for the rigging, if that builder is worth a damn he will know everything about the rigging and sign off on it. If I don't do the install, I want the owner to send me a detailed list and pics of everything in the bilge so that I know everything is sufficient. If I say it's OK and the engine were to break, then I need to put it between 2 pieces of bread and eat it. We would certainly prefer to do the install so that we know it's right, but anyone can do it if they follow some guidelines.
There shouldn't be anything special about a 600-700 hp engine so that anyone can work on it. In most cases, they are easier to work on than a Merc. The parts are available just about anywhere whereas Merc bastardizes everything. Look at the 525.....special heads, special headers, etc that must come from Merc. We use a Mefi ecm that can be scanned by a Merc scan tool and treated as if it were a 500 efi. It would be diagnosed the exact same way. Anyone that works on Merc engines can work on one of ours, no matter what power it makes. I'm not trying to toot my horn or get your business. I'm just trying to show that it can be done without a bunch of headaches and special stuff. You can build a better looking engine, with better parts, for less money, with the same warranty, and it will run as long or longer.

I want your specific opinion on what you'd recommend in my situation...
I'm looking at Motions and Spectres with 525EFI/XRs or 500EFI/XZs. I'm wanting stock (or near stock) reliable EFI power that will push it to 110-115mph for a few years and then do upgrades like Whipples/SCX4s when I'm ready to go faster. Which engine platform would you recommend to start with?

I don't think anyone does there own rebuilds buying Merc. parts. I agree if that is what you are doing then you are way over paying !!!! On the other hand I don't think there total rebuild cost is that bad knowing what they do and a piece of mind. If you happen to have a really good reputable motor builder in your area then by all means they can help you. Im just sick of everyone coming on these boards complaining about shooty work ethics, false time lines and getting ripped off. It sounds like Eddies shop in one I would have do my work if it was local for me. These type of A plus shops are hard to find. IMO if you are worried about paying that last couple thousand dollars for a good shop then you better get out of high performance boating.

Frank its no secret that you don't like Merc. You feel they are over priced and don't give anything back to the racers that use there product. That may be true today but with there engineering, R&D, and testing they produced the most reliable platform of race motors that catapulted offshore racing to hight's never before seen. It was because of there reliable packages that we had the massive growth in Factory racing. Up until then most guy's couldn't afford to race based on the cost of unreliable power.

Do you have to meet any emissions and noise regulations? The motorcycle aftermarket engine builders have to start meeting criteria when producing over xx amount of engines for public consumption per year, they can't hide behind the "race use only" anymore. Wonder if this is the same in offshore? That question is just for curiosity. I'm sure MANY people would love to have Young Perfomance engines in their boat, I would. My boat was not produced with that option as many other brands do not offer either. I have to work with what the manufacture chose to offer. If my engines had catastrophic failure tomorrow what would I do? I would have no choice, and would want to, install independent built engines, like what Mr Young builds. Smart money would choose the least path of resistance, no doubt. Would my resale value go down? In my type of boat it would. That is the reality of it, doesn't matter what is better or has more bang for buck, etc.. Fortunately I just have to do maintenance to my engines, it does not make sense for me to tear out perfectly good engines and replace them. Without independent engine builders pushing the limits of parts, upgrading build techniques, trying new combinations, the industry would not have the horsepower and performance it does today. For this I feel we are very fortunate to have the hard working men and women of the independent shops. My responses are not to say one option is better than another, that is not the point, and hopefully I have not offended or dis-respected anyone.

Actually. Eddies work is not that expensive compared to the prices up here in New York. You're paying almost the same price to send it to eddie as you would at a local shop here in Long Island, and that is if you include the shipping.

Here is a thought................

Order GM 572 - 620HP crate motors ($14K each) - bolt them in and gain 15mph.
Yes, you will have to adapt the headers and space the EFI intake.
I replaced a set of 454 Mercury Mags with GM Crate 502s (closed cooling system added) and ran the crap out them 400+ hours without a problem. Application was an ol' 10M Fountain.

I personally wouldn't spend almost 25k for a pair of automotive 620hp long blocks. You'd be better off having some custom ''marine" dedicated engines built. Not saying they wouldn't work, but just not the choice I would go. I also don't think they would gain 15mph over a pair of 525 merc engines in any twin engine boat. I believe the merc 525's actually dyno out around 570HP?
