With my 502 I use a straight 40 weight. Oil pressure seems to stay more constant and I burn less oil than when using a multi-viscosity. I hardly ever hit WOT, and when I do it may be for a minute or two.

A garden variety melling pump with blue spring will pump far more oil than a typical bbc needs at wot ,but blows off @ around 60 psi. If you have less oil pressure than 60'ish you have problems .The actual pressure may vary some from pump to pump and bypass spring. The point is at wot your pump should be keeping ahead of it's bypass valve .The bypass "blowoff" valve in pump controls wot pressure.

I fought wot oil issues for a few years, burned up a few motors in the process. Running Lake travis from marker 1 to marker 60 took about 40 minutes at wot. only lifting a bit for some turns. In the end it took a new fuel system including pumps and lines, new melling pump with 60# spring, all new oil lines / filter mount. new oil cooler, and I blocked the bypass which I get mixed opinions on. now my motors are happy. always have good oil pressure. It took a motor guy telling me that the motors are 'pissed off' lol. He said a motor tells you when it's not happy, and it's up to you to make it happy or it'll break guaranteed..

When we get home from vacation, first thing I'm doing is installing a oil cooler. IYO wich brand would you recommend. I have a 502mpi 24' eliminator. I would like to install a melling oil pump but I would have pull the whole engine out. What oil do you use. They say no M 1? 20/50 oil? Thank u
