If it's permanent install for you, my bud has an 4.0 Onan on his offshore fishing boat with a $hitload of hours that never gave him a problem. I've been told steer clear of Kohlers, don't ask me why, LOL!!! as I don't know Good luck in your search. See ya, Kelly |
Kohler's leak water from raw water pump back into the generator portion. Then you have an expensive repair bill. Engines use are Kawasaki and have had a history of being finicky.
If you are interested in a Honda, pm me as I have helped out many here on oso. |
A 3000kw Honda is far from one you lug around and strap to your platform. A 2000 may work, but depending on the size of your AC, it may not work. My 2000 will run my 9000btu AC. A buddy has a 12000btu AC and he has to run 2 2000's.
Most of the cruisers around me run either Westerbeke or Kohlers, if you are looking for a perm. install |
I want to have it installed in my Outerlimits permanently.
|
Then you will need to go with either a Westerbeke or Kohler. I currently have a Westerbeke in my 442. Kohler parts I think are more reasonably priced and readily available. Westerbeke's seem to be more reliable but harder to get parts and they are usually more expensive. I have some friends that gave up their hunt on Westerbeke parts recently and had to replace the complete unit.
|
OK, now I'm even more confused. Kohlers leak water and Westerbeke's you can't get parts for which means there customer service sucks. Does honda make one I can install?
|
No- You should go with the Westerbrooke. Better unit overall. But make sure you have a CO detector installed too. I would contact Outerlimits and see what they do for install. A 39 is a smaller boat for a gen-set. They need room.
Wannabe |
put something nice in your fine boat, dont install a piece of crap genset. look at a notherm lights, with sound shields, they run for ever...top of the line equipment... rm

Onan is what most ppl I know run. Never seem to have many if any problems and easy to get parts for at least round here.
|
oso member PAYTON has a nice used one that i believe he wants to sell.send him a pm for details.
|
a word of caution we had to replace the engine on a 5.0 westerbeke its a 3 cylinder 8hp mitubishi industrial engine but it had a cat built into the exaust manifold(even i did not know about it) it plugged and slowly killed the little engine it was 5 grand for parts to rebuild or 2 grand for a new long block this unit had 3000 hrs in a fishing boat new as of last fall their now fuel injected and around 12g
|
I have a 5kw Kohler on the formula. It's a nice compact genset, but it had not been used for quite a while. It only had 8 hours on it when I bought the boat. Lack of use seems to be what makes these things so temperamental. I went through it and caught up all the maintenance and now make it a habit to run it for a few hours every time we go out. Seems fine now.

And parts can be had anywhere...
