They're both awesome boats for sure. I'd guess the OL to have a little more top end speed as they've got great high v-hull speeds. I'd bet they'd run circles around me with less power. If your looking to move up it'll be a huge step up from our rides. Those are wish list boats for a guy like me. I'm curious, what do you see for top speed with your 502's and how are they on gph at your cruising speeds? See ya, Kelly |
OMG!!! Not another one of these threads.

It looked to me like he was asking for input on their high 30 footers as if he was looking to upgrade to a more upscale boat since he's already a 38' owner of a less appreciated manufacturer. I wish I could have told him how much I liked my old Hustler, how much better I love my new OL, and offered some good insight as to why such as top speed and handling manners etc... If thats the case I wish I was wearing his boots, LOL!!! It sure didn't look like an attempt to start a bashfest. This is, without a doubt, the best place to ask this question as I'd bet there are a couple of members who have owned both and have real world input. See ya, Kelly |
He wasn't starting a bash feast. But it won't take long for it to turn into one.

No bash
Looking at a 388 also seen a few 37 ol I like just seeing how they ride |

37 OL has huge cabin compared to the Hustler. As you may or may not know these boats have similar heritage (Fiore).
They will both perform well for their size, faster than most with equal power. The OL has more free board, and cabin. The Hustler is sleeker, lighter, but the cabin suffers. The V berth in the Hustler is almost unusable. The OL may have a rough water advantage, it is slighter heavier than the 388. Both use high quality materials, and fit and finish is above average. The wiring on the Hustler 388 is amazing IMO. The Hustler also has concealed wiring and cables in the bilge (center tubes) Not sure if the OL does the same. The Hustler tows like 2 jet skis, very light. I have never towed an OL. Both are good choices. |
Sums it up well^
To me, the 388 will ALWAYS be one of the prettiest Vee hulls ever built |
IF you want a ol 37, Scott who is in northeast section has one for sale 6 drives ,I think its a 120mph boat is for sale . I will look for his oso name been off line for a while been pissed at somethings lol. but its a sweet boat and 6 drives are nice on these. I had a ride in the 1st ol built with 5 drives and that was awesome. Mike nows his craft. like I know mine.

Ive never been on a 388. From what I have heard from a couple people about them.
They don't ride very well in rough water. At high speed, like around the century mark, chine walking is an issue? They are a great looking boat for sure, and the quality seems to be there as well. As far as the 37 Stilletto, that's just a tough boat to beat. Great rough water ride, great handling, big cabin, big engine room, and also great looking. |
As others have stated 4Bus is right on with his comparison. Who knew a Fountain guy could be so articulate. I thought all they thought about was breaking speed records and picking up chicks!
I looked at the Stiletto before purchasing the Slingshot. Excellent running boat with a lot of room in the cabin. For me it was the lines of the Hustler. Boat looks great in the water and is a blast to drive. You will not be disappointed with either boat. |

I have not been in the Hustler of question but to add a small tid bit a 37 does not tow like 2 jet skis esp in stop and go situations. I guess traveling down the e way it does. A 37 is a heavy boat and we use ours and even can sleep 4 adults, 2 in v berth and 2 on us shape couch w filler cushion. Since we use our cuddy the way we do, there is no current high perf boat being made that has the room we have. Sure the 52 OL is longer but the head room is poor.
Also at one point my boat could run 114 mph and that owners statement about this hull is if you keep putting power to it that it will simply go faster w no negative results. We down graded power for reliability. If I were to buy another boat today I would want a 42 OL as its much the same as mine except I could get a baot as new as 08 I belive. FWIW, I think this could be a good thread w good information. Hustler 388 is an excelllent hull too. |
I think 4Bus was referring to the Hustler with regards to towing like two jet ski's.

Someone stated that the 388 may be "loose". I will admit it does have a light airy feeling while driving, but nothing I would consider unsafe by any means. Locally there are two 388s with serious mods. One is an ASD7 Conversion boat with 800HP that runs well into the trip didgits, the other is the "famous" Black Cloud 388 with Arnesons that put down a 140 +/- MPH years ago, owned by the late brother of Rick from Aquamania Racing. If evening cabin luxury is your thing, lean to the 37 OL. 388 gets the edge of easy towing, faster with small power, sleeker lines. 37 OL may get the nod in extreme rough water Again, neither are bad choices. both great boats. Two local 388s are currently for sale, 540 cui 388 xr for $70k and 800HP ASD7 conversion for $119. Both extremely clean on great trailers. PM me if you would like contact info. Also Kevin (cig92 oso name) is selling his ultra clean 37 OL that has big NA power and runs strong and reliable. You can PM me or him direct for contact info. |
All good points. The 388 does ride a little firmer than a lot of boats in its size, but it was about unbeatable in F2 for quite some time. The boat is built to take it. Its a "Get it on top" of the waves kind of boat. 4bus has hit the nail on the head! And yes, the bravo boats are squirrely above 97 or so. There is a bottom change that Huslter will do if you want to run over 105 or so....or just buy the 39 Rockitt.
Like 4bus said, really cant go wrong, you're deciding between two great hulls. |
I looked at a 388 Hustler and 3 different 37 OL's before buying the OL (also looked at 39 Nortech, 37 AT, 38 Donzi ZR etc.) The Hustler's cabin eliminated the 388 as an option for me. If you don't use a cabin much or overnight etc., it would be fine. I've heard of the chine walking over 100 MPH with Hustler, but I personally never rode in one after seeing the cabin size. I'm sure my 37 OL isn't as easy to tow as the Hustler, but on my Myco, it pulls fine, and safe.
The only thing I would warn you about with a 37 OL is that you're going to be buying an older boat. It can cost you a bloody fortune to fix it up, and if you do a complete re-do, you will have as much in it as some new, or at least much newer, boats. Good luck with your puchase! |
Both good hulls. If you are thinking bigger power, search here on the 388 becoming a handful at speeds over 90 MPH is what I seem to remember. Not sure if bottom tweeking solves it ? Smaller power, no problem. Outerlimits has higher freeboard and bigger cabin, as mentioned.

To be fair the jet ski's would have to be full of fuel. If not that comparison is just ridiculous!:angry-smiley-038:

Our 388 runs good in 3-4's you just have to get on top of the waves. The OL are great boats also, and I would also love to own 1, but our 388 was a killer deal, and I love the how it is rigged and the paint
|
How about a 2014 388 for $290k sounds pretty good
