Quadcopter crash on the poker run

I saw a couple of them in the water. anyone know how many total went down over the weekend?

Cole2534 02-25-2014 01:56 PM

I wonder what's going to happen when one scratches a freshly painted deck.

Perlmudder 02-25-2014 01:59 PM

I read that two crashed.

H20 Toie 02-25-2014 02:03 PM

At gilberts one went in right in front of my boat
on the raft up one hit the poles on the yacht and went down ( i didnt see if it hit a boat or went in the water)
one went in the water before the poker run even started

and i thought one crashed at the card stop in marina

phragle 02-25-2014 02:04 PM

Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keith Atlanta 02-25-2014 03:19 PM

So, how well do they work after being in salt water?

Go_Jim 02-25-2014 03:22 PM

While I don't ever see an outright ban on these small quadcopters, I do see some regulations in the future--especially for larger ones being used for commercial purposes (which I suspect will require licensed operators). All it's going to take to get the regulatory ball rolling is some bozo flying a quadcopter into a crowd of people at a public event. You just know that that's going to happen at some point, and the news media and politicians will go nuts.

I can see in ten years from now when these things are flying all over the place them becoming a PITA

There ARE rules already and the FAA has hit a few people... They can NOT be used for anything remotely resembling commercial purposes. You can not sell video and / or piks taken by them, news crews can not use them. insurance companies can not use them etc. Right now the faa considers them remote control airplanes (think hobby) The FAA has even gone after real estate companies using drones to photograph properties for sale.

Aren't the blades in the quadcopters protected within a ring?

spectras only 02-25-2014 04:37 PM

While the quadcopters are nowhere near as dangerous as single rotor ones, either electric or gas, it could still be dangerous regarding of its size.
Even a small [ like my gas Bell 47 with 36" rotor span ] rc heli with 250 pounds of force at the tip of the rotor blades @ 1500 rpms could cause serious injury.
Larger rc helis are extremely dangerous as the picture above shows.

Keith Atlanta 02-25-2014 04:45 PM

Wait? What hapened tot he kid with the head trauma? I assume they were photoshopped pics.... I guess not?

Some people actually got decapitated by r/c heli rotorblades, so the picture could be legit, unfortunately.

Yes, but one going down and smashing you in the face at XXmph is gonna sting a bit!

Level III Chaos 02-25-2014 05:06 PM

The new DJI Model S1000 is shipping out in the next day or so.......only 15 minutes rating though.

For what it's worth.....

I would much rather read about this than a blow over or spin out.....or losing another brother.....

The reports that I have gotten (first hand) is that most maintained a 40-60 mph while a couple of cats got "out there" but only periodically and momentarily.

Kudos to all that attended keeping in mind that it's NOT a race!

Interceptor 02-25-2014 05:29 PM

Wait until one gets into controlled airspace.

1989mach1 02-25-2014 05:34 PM

this is what happens when every one and there brother gets one and thinks they r pros at flying them because they can do it in there back yard. if operated properly they will be grate for are sport. I don't have one and its probably a good thing but am looking for them to be around more this summer.

cig92 02-25-2014 05:50 PM

i think it's a great addition to the sport. it will capture a lot more footage than the average joe. i think most of you are blowing this all out of perspective. there is danger in anything today, any case could be made, but really? i think you have a better chance of falling off the back of the boat while leaving the dock and pushing off and then falling in the water and getting chopped up. sounds pretty stupid ehh. the last thing this county needs is more laws, we already live in a communist country with our current government

I agree, but more like 3 or 4 years. I can see our local sandbars with 30 or 40 of these things flying and smashing into each other. Maybe I'll take the Mossberg out for some skeet shooting! LOL

mosi 02-25-2014 06:28 PM

I think it's the End of the World!!!!

polsprung 02-25-2014 06:30 PM

Holy cow, those helicopters are pretty incredible. I'm not into RC, but I see why there's such a strong following. He was killed by the same model shown in this vid.

MILD THUNDER 02-25-2014 06:50 PM

I wanna get one so i can hover it outside my hot neighbors bathroom window. Im sick of climbing trees.

Wildman_grafix 02-25-2014 07:39 PM

They will give a new meaning to skeet shooting.

gofastlvr 02-25-2014 08:11 PM

Mine has started to be harder and harder to fly. I think the stabilizer has crapped out and I have it being worked on now by a local hobby shop but it is really a PITA when you burn $1500 by the time you buy the unit, have it shipped, hard case, extra batteries, extra blades etc... I think everyone is having problems that I know that has bought one of these things.

So your saying don't rush out and buy one yet?

314joey 02-25-2014 09:11 PM

Expensive little hobby for sure, I think I'll just stick to my gopro and boating.

Bert Kammerer takes 3D heli flying to another level. Even though he's one if not the best, I wouldn't stand next to him while he's doing his stunt flying.Enjoy the video.

I saw the words copter, crash, and poker run. Opened the thread hoping I there wasn't a tragedy involving a helicopter. What a relief... Just a tragedy of a couple of toys.

I wish it was photoshop but it is very real and he was awesome at flying his r/c copter. He made one mistake and it was fatal. :(

I just had no idea how maneuverable they are and these are humans flying. So what happens when they're programmed to fly at their maximum ability with a computer...search and destroy gets pretty damn scary.

thirdchildhood 02-26-2014 09:38 AM

This is video of the 19 year old from New York City who was killed which shows his flying skills. This is not from the day of the accident and contains nothing bad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9rjAL6g5IU#t=27

Matt Trulio 02-26-2014 10:52 AM

As a former skydiver, I can say with some experience that even a soft nylon canopy with a top forward speed of 35 mph can be lethal in the wrong hands. As in all aircraft, quad copters/drones are only as good as the people controlling them. Like all of you, I love the camera angles they provide—it's the ESPN XGames "camera-on-a-wire" technique that the NFL adopted later, minus the wire—but any flying object presents a potential hazard. So pilot skill acquisition and extraordinary caution are musts. This technology, while not "brand new," is still new enough that it needs to be approached with a ton of respect. Not saying that wasn't what happened in these cases, just a general observation/suggestion.

There is an upside here, and I mean this sincerely: Last time I was anywhere near a helicopter crash that involved shooting powerboats, two people died and one was seriously injured. So in the air at least, no lives are at risk with drones.

SHARKEY-IMAGES 02-26-2014 11:47 AM

Getting even more interesting: http://diydrones.com/m/blogpost?id=7...Post%3A1551726

As fast as the technology is changing on these multi rotor UAVs, I personally will wait for things to level off a bit. The system I was about to buy a year ago was I believe $1500 before all the options. Now many are $500 including many of the options.
