2007 328 xi and no I did not set the motor before pulling it off and did hear a springing noise when removing the motor

Wind the 4mm allen @ the back of the valvetronic motor clockwise by hand until it stops. Remove the motor and check the base flange and ensure it is flat/straight. Sometimes it helps to wind the motor counterclockwise slightly to get it out. Same goes when you reinstall, wind clockwise and make sure it is fully seated/lined up with the holes, then install the 3 bolts. Cycle the key (start/stop) and listen for the valvetronic to do its full sweep.

No misfires or faults correct?

Also ensure the valve cover gasket hasn't fallen out of its groove/oxygen sensor wiring isn't pinched at the rear of the cover. Use a mirror and check around the whole VC
