#3 - Houston/Galveston's first attempt to rebuild Redfish Island!
(For those not from here, Redfish Island was a great boater destination in Galveston Bay that eroded away, but is now in the process of being rebuilt.)

My wife sells container space for K-Line America. Those pictures are her worst nightmare...and mine, if you know what I mean. Makes for very unhappy clients.

My father and his guys removed a large bulk frieghter off the beach in the 80's up on Lake Superior near Duluth. It was late November and the ship was anchored and was attempting to weather a fierce storm. The anchors dragged and it ended up on the beach just like the ship in photo 2. Getting the ship on the beach was easy. Mother Nature can to incredible things. Getting it off was the trick. It took several large tug boats, maybe 12 or so and several spud barges with cranes and excavators to dig around the ship. My father has photos of the ship on the beach in his house. The photos put everything in perspective becuse you can see the HUGE tugs n relation to the ship and the tugs look tiny.

It' called a hurricane, the anchors were out to stop it from being blown ashore. Force 5 winds on a 300' hull laughed at 2 little 5 ton anchors set out. Tidal surge of 10-15 feet no problem. How to get it off? Big Dredge after you unload it.

I saw a show on the Discovery Channel once, a few weeks back, on guys who do this for living. It was INTENSE!! One ship was large fishing vessel, that had a fire, and its cargo holds were FULL TO THE BRIM with rotten FISH. Can you believe they lived on the boat for several weeks as they dismantled and recovered it? Can you imagine? Did anyone else catch this show?
