Bury the tabs and drive and go from there. There is no reason a 28 with a 502 would have trouble planning unless it's propped incorrectly or the motor isn't making the proper power.

The 28 Checkmate is a pretty big boat . Buddy has one and he built a small block for it pushing 600+HP. The boat GPS'd over 80 mph and it gets up on plane pretty quick with its power. Maybe that 502 is a bit tired?

The boat needs the drives tucked in and tabs slightly down negative for take offs. Likes to run with bow high so K-planes are must.

Sounds like the drive was not all the way in. I have a 270 with a 496HO and a 1.65 drive turning a 28. Mine likes a little tab depending on load.
