I was flamed on the cheap dock lines thread but there is a big difference between the cheap, light double braided poly with sewn cute embroidered tag and heavy DB nylon from Sampson or New England cordage.

I have Sampson and there is no mercy. I admit, deep down I get a sick satisfaction throwing it when the catcher is half hearted with an arm hanging out but not really paying attention. More interested in their drink, conversation, music, whatever instead of the fact two boats are coming together. Toss the line over...WHACK...it will get their attention. Also stiffer so it will lay and not quickly slide off, snaking back into the water.

Naw, we just get closer to the dock and hand them the rope.

It gets harder to do when you have stalling, surging, staggered blower motors.

None of that is necessary if thrown properly. Neatly, and properly coil the line to be tossed while hanging on to the end. Toss the entire coil over the head of the person catching the line and it will uncoil in flight and fall gently within their grasp.

I know how to throw a line, all I am saying is that something with some more density at the end of your line will allow you to throw the rope further if need be. It's simple physics, take a rope in the parking lot and see how far you can throw it, now take that rope and for experiments sake tape something with decent mass on the end (lacrosse ball, baseball, hockey puck, anything you have sitting around). Now, chuck that rope and I will bet you that it goes further and is able to be thrown with a lot more accuracy.
