I need opinions on the stripe & logo layout
I have been working on stripes for my Concept 30. It had an ugly dark blue and yellow stripe along the water line that I hated. I wetsanded it off in hopes there wouldn't bee too much discoloration. Unfortunately there is, so I will have to restripe. I have used masking tape to put the stripes on then used MS paint to color it close to what we want. I also worked a bit on the Concept 30 logo, replaced it and also put an oval around it which I think helped it. But my fear is it makes the boat look too much like I am trying to copy a Cigarette...... Take a look at this picture and tell me if that is the impression you guys get as well. While I like the look of the logo this way, I also don't want it to look like I am copying Cigarette or trying to make my CC look like a Cigarette. Also the arch is missing in the photos, at the powder coaters for new color (Blue). Ignore the light colored stripe toward the bow. That is the result of cutting and pasting and filling in, using MS paint...

Looks nothing like the Cigarette logo IMO..

Cigarette, Baja, Active Thunder, Outerlimits......each have the oval. I wouldn't worry about that myself.
|
My fear was it would look like I was trying to make it something it's not......... So then on to the next question, opinions on the logo and stripes themselves.... Knowing I have to go with stripes at the bottom (to cover up the area where previous stripes were)...... Is the top stripe too much?
|
Here are a couple of other layouts (with just masking tape, I didn't have time to use MS Paint to fill in with color).

I like the graphic with the oval, and I like both top and bottom stripes. If it were mine, I'd add in a hi-vis orange color somewhere, it looks really sharp with blues.

I am more of a basic guy. I like understated graphics & colors that simply accent the lines of the boat. This boat has really nice classic lines to it (IMO), so adding the stripes the way I am, just highlights the lines that are already there.....

I like having no brand logo. Never understood why the boat brand/logo needs to splashed on the hull side. We don't do that with cars and trucks or airplanes.

agree... last one (number 3)

SO the third one with the top stripes down a bit and the original concept logo above the stripe? Putting the logo there I wouldn't do the oval. When I moved the logo between the lines, it looked like it was missing something until I added the Oval..... I am definitely going with top and bottom stripes. Just undecided on which logo and where to put it.

Yes an try the oval logo smaller like in the first pic but with the strips in the third pic. Just my .02

I know why the third photo makes the boat look longer, the tip and bottom stripes are closer together. That is giving the visual illusion of being sleeker.

I did a rendering with the concept logo left in place with the oval and it doesn't look right. The only way it seemed to look right was when In between the stripes.....

Personally, I like a larger single chine stripe accented with a thin stripe of the other color (your case big blue, little yellow). But I am biased, based on my boat.
Another option would be to make the lower or upper stripe thicker than the other stripes. (see formula pic) |
Since I now own a vinyl plotter/cutter..... I will cut the lower stripes (blue 1-3/4" and Line green 3/4") and put them on as I have to to hide the previous stripe history (discoloration). And since I have the plotter and material, I will cut and put the upper stripes on one side. If they look good, I will finish the other side. If not, I'm not out anything extra as I had to buy the roll for the lower stripes and no one is charging me extra for additional stripes. Now I get to try all kinds of things (with the new plotter).......
|
Now the big question is.... What else are you gonna do with that plotter/cutter?
|
Post of some pictures when you get the stripes on. I actually have green flames with a purple shadow on my Harley and it looks awesome.

While I still haven't decided on the stripe layout quite yet, I have finalized and cut the new "Concept 30" logos and stripes. Here is a pic of the new logo cut and taped to the boat. (the colors aren't as bright as they will be because the application tape is still on. You can see the real colors in the photo showing the rolls of stripes. Have a few more hours in wetsanding and polishing before I can put the new graphics on...

After getting the Radar Arch back from the Powder Coater, I realized there was a lot of pitting where the antenna brackets were mounted. No one will really see it since it is on top of the arch, but it still bothered me. Since I now have a vinyl plotter at my disposal, I decided to cover that area up with a "Concept" sticker. It doesn't completely hide the pitting, it certainly covers it up pretty good. Plus anyone flying overhead will know it's a Concept. Which has given me an idea.... Since the Detroit River is an International boarder, we often have Helicopters flying over (boarder patrol). It might be fun to put a message for our local law enforcement officers on the top of the arch :evilb:

I like option one the best but none of them look bad. I had a Donzi 22zx with a blue and yellow bootstripe and that boat got compliments everywhere I went.

Got the boat wheeled out yesterday evening. I didn't have much light left, but did manage to get the new graphic put on. I hope to get the stripes done this weekend.

Finally! After stepping back and looking at it, I was not pleased with my wet sanding job. After being wheeled out is was just too cloudy in places. So I ended up using a DA w/800 grit, wet block sanding with 1000 and then 1200 using a guide coat in between (to insure I didn't miss any scratches or low spots). After that got her wheeled out again. Then the stripes and Registration numbers went on. Even though the boat looked really good in the pics with a top and bottom set of stripes, it didn't look very good in person. So I went with the bottom stripe only and it turned out great. These colors really pop on the bright white hull. I redid the interior vinyl (panels/seats) and dash panel to match, also added blue LEDs. Since this thread was about the stripe, I will just post the finished product. However, I will be posting in either the project/restore area and/or the concept area.
