How many record breaking runs are there?

I've heard of the Key West to Cancun, and the New York to Bimini, are there any other ones out there that are popular?

Is there any for the Loop.

Are there any that don't have records that should?

US1 Fountain 05-14-2014 11:12 AM

I had 13 people on my cruiser last yr for a booze cruise. Music was blaring, Blender was blending, Dance floor was hoping. Lights were flashing. I'm going to try for 14 this yr. :)

Around Long Island.

FWIW, I enjoy the long distance racing a lot more than the bay racing we know today.

s022mag 05-14-2014 01:38 PM

I just meant the guys that set out the record from point A to point B. there's got to be one for Miami to Key West, or Ft Lauderdale to Bimini.

The around Long Island in my eyes is a point a to point b record run, although it has been run as a group of boats running together to "race" around Long Island, let's face it, each time in the past two years a record was set it was on a day hand picked by the individual who wanted the record...... Or at least the record for his class.....

Here's Johnny 05-14-2014 02:43 PM

Or how about this one that someone posted here a while ago.......
This is actually a race......

I don't know about others but I really enjoyed reading about Bob the Builders run to Cancun when he beat Reggies record set by a 48 Express Cruiser.
I think I remember one of the guys here might be contemplating the challenge of beating this record,
I believe it was BYC in the diesel that went to Bermuda from NY
See ya,

Chicago to Detroit, 12 hours 34 minutes 41 seconds, the record set in 1983 by Michael Reagan, son of the former president. He covered the distance in a 38-foot Scarab powered by triple-gasoline engines.

Tampa - Miami
Miami - Nassau
The great loop
New York City - England Trans-atlantic
Round Britain
Around the world speed record (first set by Magellan 500 years ago)

We have some new props that were CNC'ed from billets of the strongest metal we could find. The blades are over twice as thick as a normal prop. They started out weighing 2500 lbs then all the metal machined away and now they weigh 54 lbs each. The other prop in the pic is a 17" herring for size comparison.

A lot of cool runs to do, I think the Detroit to Chicago sounds like a blast. Same with Miami to Tampa.

On the New Orleans to St Louis Run to you get the cooperation of the locks or just try and time it just right?

No locks on the river after Alton just north of STL. Wide open, just you, the tug boats and logs. Almost no gas stations either. That record would be tough, it was set in a fast cat.

That prop is really cool. I love that you are doing lots of R&D for the sport.

Really?? I had no clue. Any idea on how much elevation drop there is from STL to New Orleans?

akaboatman 05-15-2014 04:17 PM

Howard Arneson holds the record. 12. Something from way back. Cut the time in half. At the time he said if they do the run again he would have a helicopter fuel him.

The Mississippi record is on our schedule for one of the first runs we are going to do in the new boat. It will be a good amount of distance to test all of our systems without being hundreds of miles from shore incase something breaks. Arneson ran really fast but then would have to stop for fuel several times. We will not be as fast top end but will have the range to do it without refueling.

TYPHOON 05-15-2014 05:52 PM

I have often wondered what the time difference would be by caring all the extra fuel and going slower due to the weight vs stopping to be refueled. It cant take that long to pump a couple hundred gallons with the right set up. Im not talking about going into some port at the gas pump but a pre determined location waiting for you with a fast pump system. 5 minutes tops ????? Not hard to make that up vs speed difference on a long attempt. Plus it gives your crew a break to check your equipment. Thoughts????

s022mag 05-16-2014 08:25 AM

I agree, what's the difference in speeds? What would your max speed be for fuel economy and what would it be vs WOT.

When we broke the Hudson Run, we found it a lot quicker to carry an extra 90 gallons on board, than stop for fuel. Boat still ran 115 like that. Only lost 6-7mph up top. A lot of the reason we beat it, is the previous record holder, stopped for fuel. Plus the extra weight helped the boat in the big water.

In the Skater V diesel With the 19" dia 39" pitch 16' rake 6 blades from 400 gallon all the way down to empty we ran 82 MPH (on the rev limiters). With 630 gallons it ran 76 MPH (130 gallons were in bladder tank in the nose, it was going to be rough)

with the 19" dia 44" pitch 24' rake 6 blades with 300 gallons all the way to empty it would run 84 MPH (on the rev limiters). With 630 gallons it ran 74 MPH (130 gallons were in the nose)

With the new twice as thick 20" dia 40" pitch 18' rake with 300 gallons it runs 78 MPH (the thickness probably hurts a little and the dia could be smaller)

We can run 700-800 miles on the amount of fuel that does not change the speed, the next 400-500 miles of fuel load would progressively drop the speed down 6 MPH. In general we get around 2 mpg at any speed from 30 mph up to within 2-3 mph of top speed.

our plan on the Key West to Cancun record was to run 70 MPH the whole time, we had enough fuel to make it there and back non-stop. (Broke the prop had no spare)

our plan on New York City to Bermuda was to put the throttle on the dash and let off in 800 miles when we arrived in Bermuda. 60 Miles out of New York we broke a prop, put the first (not right size or rotation) spare and decided to run 55 MPH the rest of the way (record was only 40 MPH). Then at 660 miles the other prop broke, put on the other spare (borrowed, thanks Joe) And decided to run 35 MPH to try to be as easy on the props as we could and still finish an hour ahead of the record. That was the most nerve racking 4 hours of my life, going slow and wondering if your going to make it. We beat the record by a little over an hour. The long distance records your top speed does not matter as much as being able to make it.
