If you want answers to the questions surrounding this tragic event. Take 38 minutes and listen to this audio. This is an interview of Sgt. Randy Henry of the MSHP just hours after the event...
http://whotv.com/2014/09/12/recordin...gson-drowning/ All of these will come into play over the course of the civil trial. And, judging by the tape, the tragic events were set into motion by a belligerent suspect and the lawyer-wannabe/jackazz/friend that jumped in to "save" the suspect from incriminating himself, followed by an officer who chose to take shortcuts. Readjusting the jacket and cuffs situation at a safe distance may have indeed saved this kid's life. Likewise, if the friend would have realized the lake wasn't a courtroom, stayed in his boat, STFU, and LET THE OFFICER DO HIS JOB, we may not be conversing about this terrible situation. Pay a settlement, fire the officer, train the next batch better. Drowning caused the death, the officer's inaction led to it, and the actions of the suspect and his friend put it all in motion. |
I just listened to the whole Henry interview and I'm flabbergasted, someone couldn't write a horror story where every mistake that someone could make actually did happened and this WP guy is still on duty, if anyone takes the time to listen to this and still thinks Peircy shouldn't at the very least be fired then I'm crazy and all the contradictions, he know he royally focked up and start CYA.
can't put the "proper" PFD on properly. doesn't know how to start a boat (won't start in gear) driving way to fast doesn't know how his own PFD works making sure there was someone sober on the other boat that was sober to drive Anything else, oh, yea, he let a handcuffed young man in his custody drown.....................protect and serve........................FAIL. |

I have been going by the facts as they are known. There was numerous witnesses at the time of the accident that stated the kid jumped. BUT... that is subjective because NO One was on the boat but him and the officer and the witnesses were at a distance. So did he jump or was he bounced out, that is the question. If you read the entire article, he did not leave the boat at the same time as they hit the wave. It was after...And if he was "thrown" out of the boat don't yopu think a persons body would look like a bobbling mass and people would expect it to look like that as he went in, not appear to jump. (This is MY hypothetical observation, truth is no one here knows)
Here is the facts: 1) He was 3x the legal limit for adults BAC + a trace of Cocaine was also in his system 2) He was underage. 3) someone served him or made available the booze and Drugs 4) he was arrested for that infraction. And then ALL the facts start to get blurry except the obvious, he was handcuffed and an improper PFD was placed upon him. And finally: 1 career will likely be over and another ones life is over. I Don't think anyone will disagree that WP officer needs some type of reprimand. But was it criminal or civil. At this point, it appears it will be civil. And we as tax payers will get to pay the bill. NOT you out of staters, but those of us that live in Missouri. At this point I think the question is what is the settlement going to be and how can that be used to make things better overall, not just pay a bunch of money that does no "real good". now that the tape has been realeased (after the joke court) seems as alot of your opinions may change. |
Amazing that this could have happened but even more amazing that this guy is still on the water. In a 6 minute video recording he said "I probably did a bunch of things wrong here" "I'm banged up a little bit but I am all right. I don't know if I'm sore from treading water with the basard, but I feel spent. I thougt I had run a marathon" People should be outraged that he is still on the job

Regardless of how the WP officer acted, which I think we can ALL agree is terrible, it still comes back to the Kid was The beginning of the cause that started the entire chain of events...
AND those that served him or made available the Booze and Drugs are in my opinion also partially at fault. My opinion will never change... And if you have read my posts, I have stated numerous times I agree the WP officer needs to be reprimanded... |

My opinion will never change as well.. Piercy should go swimming with handcuffs, concrete shoes, and no life vest . |
I just followed the link and the recording is only a couple minutes long, did they take the full one off the web site?

I just read through all 17 pages of this thread and must say some posts are absolutely insane. Here's my .02...
The kid was extremely irresponsible. WP did a good job on removing the threat and protecting the public. If the kid was that intoxicated extra care should have been taken to protect him from himself. I don't know what the water conditions were at the time, but 40 mph wasn't good judgement with a kid that is 3 times the legal limit and a life jacket that was not secured properly. The kid made a bad decision and was on his way to serving out his punishment. Unfortunately he didn't get that far due to neglagance. Weather he jumped or fell out is not important to me. They don't leave the rear doors in a patrol car unlocked for this very reason. Can anybody give a legitimate reason why this officer is still on the force? He may not deserve to go to jail, but he certainly should not just continue living his life and not be held accountable in some form or fashion. I think that if this happened to a loved one of somebody that has posted here (hopefully never does) the opinions would be different. I can only imagine what his family and friends are going through. |

17% of 652 boat deaths in 2012 the leading contributor was alcohol, or 110 total. Meanwhile 75 million Americans will boat in a year. http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/website...f/14boatus.pdf The chance of this pontoon boater killing someone or being killed? .00014667% Don't kid yourselves. If they really cared about boater safety, wouldn't this guy be alive? No it's all about money. If you don't believe that you are naive or your pay check dictates that this is something you aren't allowed to believe. I'm more shocked by the number of bootlickers totally in support of our police state. It makes me sick. Let's celebrate this idea of turning inexperienced idiots into government revenue centers. The dumber the better, wouldn't want them smart enough to understand the real reason their job exists. http://www.npr.org/2014/05/19/312158...unish-the-poor Meanwhile police kill somewhere between 400 and 3000 people per year. They don't record the statistics very well obviously. http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/...ill-each-year/ Like I said before. I'll take the drunk guy on the toon with a 35 horse on it over the redneck flunky with a badge and gun every day of the week and twice on Sunday. |
